What Is SAE Coupling
Tuesday, September 10, 2013 | Labels: coupling, is, sae, what | |In the aerospace and automotive industries, couplings are used as connections between two mechanisms. Couplings are found in all types of motorized devices and are held to industry standard. The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) sets the standards on couplings.
Purpose of Couplings
Couplings differ from one device to another. It is important to know which coupling is appropriate for the machine, as speed and torque factor into selecting the correct coupling. Misalignment will occur if rates of vibration and shock absorption are too much for the coupling to handle.
Types of Couplings
Disk, gear, grid and snap connections are a few types of couplings. Each coupling is defined by its specific inner workings. Snap couplings are connected and disconnected with the ease of snapping, while grid couplings are grooved and connect by a spring. Gear couplings are connected by teeth, and disk couplings are more complex and precisely identical.
The Society of Automotive Engineers
SAE was created for the sole purpose of setting standards for the American automotive industry. Although SAE is not a federal entity, they are respected as such and standards are followed throughout the U.S., Japan, Australia, Germany, India and the United Kingdom.
