What Is a Fuel Cap

Manufacturers first developed gas caps to prevent rain from entering the fuel tank when automobiles came off the assembly line. By the 1970s, the purpose of the fuel cap was to keep the gas in the tank for safety reasons and to prevent harmful vapors from seeping into the environment.

Driving without a gas cap allows hazardous gas fumes to surround your car. A random spark or fire can ignite the fumes; this is more likely in the case of an accident.

An OEM (original equipment manufacturer) fuel cap provides the best fit since it matches the filler neck threads. OEM caps also offer the correct vent valves and are specially designed for your automobiles fuel system.

Locking Fuel Cap

Locking fuel cap manufacturers claim to match the quality of OEM construction. These devices prevent someone from siphoning gas from the vehicle or trying to damage the tank.

Missing Fuel Cap

Some car owners accidentally misplace their fuel cap by leaving it at the gas station. If you are unable to locate your fuel cap, you can often purchase a new one at your local auto parts store.
