My 1997 4Runner Wont Start

The Toyota 4Runner is an SUV used for off-roading or hauling materials. If your 1997 Toyota 4Runner will not start, there are a couple of easy things that you can do realtively quickly. The battery and fluid levels are the first things to check to get the Toyota 4Runner started again.

Instructions

    1

    Open the hood to your 4Runner and look over the battery for any corrosion.

    Clean the corroded battery terminals with a rag and then tighten them to the battery.

    3

    Check the positive and negative leads on the terminals to make sure the battery is installed properly.

    Check the lights in your 4Runner to make sure that you didnt leave any on. If you left your lights on, the battery may just need to charge.

    Use a separate car and jump the battery with jumper cables. Connect the positive lead of the jumper cable to the positive lead on your car battery. Connect the negative lead of the jumper cable to the negative lead on your car battery. Repeat the process on another car. Start the car and then start your car.

    Check the fluid levels in your car. Low fluid can cause the engine to lock up and will inhibit the car from starting.

    Check the fuel level to make sure you have enough gas.

How do I Replace the Rotors on a 2002 Toyota 4Runner?

The rotors are arguably the most important of all of the components of the 2002 Toyota 4Runners brake assembly. The rotors provide the platform on which the brake pads rely to slow and eventually stop the vehicle. Damaged rotors will compromise the effectiveness of the brakes, leading to uncontrolled braking and possibly brake failure. Inspect the rotors regularly for scoring and other damage to catch any repair or replacement needs as soon as possible.

Instructions

    1

    Park the 4Runner on a flat surface and turn the engine off. Open the hood and remove the master cylinder cap located on the right side of the engine, near the back of the engine compartment. Remove 1/3 of the brake fluid from the reservoir with a turkey baster. Place a shop rag over the containers opening.

    Place tire blocks in front of the front tires. Loosen the lug nuts on the rear wheels with the 17-mm socket and breaker bar. Place the jack under the frame in the back of the vehicle and lift the rear wheels off the ground. Rest the rear axles onto jack stands and remove the jack. Remove the lug nuts and take the back wheels/tires off.

    Remove the caliper slide bolts on the right rear caliper with the 14-mm wrench. Lift the caliper from the caliper bracket and suspend it above the brake assembly with a wire coat hanger or bungee cord. Remove the brake pads from the caliper bracket by hand. Each of the two pads will slide from the caliper bracket slots on either side of the right rear brake rotor.

    Remove the caliper bracket bolts with the 16-mm wrench. Lift the bracket from the rotor and set it aside.

    Tap the center section of the rotor with a dead-blow hammer to loosen the grip of rust on the back side of the rotor. Grab the rotor on both sides and pull it straight from the wheel hub.

    Spray brake parts cleaner on the wheel hub and clean the area with a wire brush to remove rust and other debris. Clean the new brake rotors thoroughly with brake cleaner and a cloth towel.

    Place the new rotor on the wheel bolts with the raised center section facing out. Replace the caliper bracket on the rotor and screw in the caliper bolts. Slide the new brake pads into the bracket slots on either side of the rotor.

    Place the C-clamp over the caliper piston and the back side of the rear caliper. Squeeze the piston into the side of the caliper. Remove the clamp after the piston has been forced completely inside the caliper wall. Place the caliper over the bracket and the new brake pads. Screw in the caliper slide bolts and tighten them with the 14-mm wrench.

    Move to the opposite side of the 4Runner and replace the left rotor and brake pads (follow Steps 3 through 8). Place the wheels back on the Toyotas rear wheel bolts and screw on the lug nuts by hand. Lift the rear-end of the 4Runner with the jack and remove the jack stands. Lower the rear tires to the ground and tighten the lugs with the socket and breaker bar. Return to the drivers seat.

    Start the Toyotas engine and press the brake pedal repeatedly until the pedal response returns to normal. Move to the engine compartment with a funnel and brake fluid. Remove the shop rag and place the funnel inside the reservoir. Fill the master cylinder with brake fluid. Remove the funnel and replace the master cylinder cap. Close the Toyotas hood.

How to Remove the Factory Stereo in a 98 Toyota 4Runner

Replacing a faulty stereo and upgrading to an aftermarket unit are among the most popular reasons why Toyota 4Runner owners choose to remove the factory-installed stereo. Although Toyota manufactures very reliable stereo equipment, problems do happen from time to time. The most common problems that occur with the factory stereo are static feedback and intermittent radio button operation or failure. Because the factory radio is not serviceable while inside the vehicle, it must be removed in order to be repaired or replaced with another unit.

Instructions

Removal

    1

    Disconnect the negative battery lead with a battery wrench. Lift up the center console cover and insert a flat-head screwdriver in between the edge of the parking brake/cup holder panel and the outer console.

    2

    Pry around the outside of the parking brake/cup holder panel with the flat-head screwdriver in order to disengage its retaining clips. Remove the parking brake/cup holder panel and set it aside.

    Insert a flat-head screwdriver in between the shifter console panel and the center console and pry around the circumference of the shifter console panel. Remove the shifter console panel.

    Pry around the circumference of the center cluster finish panel with a flat-head screwdriver to disengage the locking clips. Grip the center cluster finish panel with two hands and pull it toward you to separate it. Disconnect the center cluster finish panels electrical connectors and remove the panel.

    5

    Remove the screws holding the radio to the center of the dashboard and pull the radio out of its slot. Disconnect the radios electrical connectors and remove the radio from the vehicle.

Installation

    6

    Reconnect the radios electrical connectors and slide it into its mounting slot. Reinstall the radios retaining screws.

    7

    Reconnect the center cluster finish panels electrical connectors and set it into position. Press down on the edges of the panel until it snaps into place.

    8

    Set the shifter console panel into position over the shifter and press it into place until the locking clips engage.

    9

    Set the parking brake/cup holder panel into position and press it down until it locks into place.

    10

    Close the center console compartment lid, reconnect the battery cable and test the radio.
