How to Measure the Bore of a Hydraulic Cylinder

Hydraulic cylinders are found in automobiles, boats and other large equipment. Hydraulic oil or another pressurized fluid powers the cylinder and forces a piston located inside a barrel to move back and forth. The inner diameter of the barrel, where the piston moves, is known as the bore, and is a critical measure for the operation of the hydraulic cylinder. The lifting force of a cylinder is based on the size of the bore diameter multiplied by the hydraulic pressure. Measure the bore of a hydraulic cylinder to help calculate generated force.

Instructions

    1

    Disassemble the cylinder so that the bore is accessible. The exact procedure depends on the type of hydraulic cylinder. Clean any fluid from inside.

    Twist the ratchet on the end of the telescopic bore gauge until the anvil and head are slightly larger than the opening in the bore.

    Place the opened anvil and head against the bores opening at a gentle angle. Slowly straighten the bore gauge until the base of the instrument stands vertical and the head and anvil touch opposite sides of the bore wall. Rock the gauge gently in the bore to lock the anvil in place.

    Remove the telescopic bore gauge from the bore. Measure the distance between the head and anvil with a micrometer or caliper to determine the diameter of the bore.

How to Measure an Axle Shaft

Axle shafts are used on most non-commercial vehicles to allow the drive wheels of your vehicle to move in a circular manner. The shafts are located in your tires wheel well, near the differentials. They stretch across the bottom of the car, connecting two wheels together. Obtaining a measurement for an axle shaft is necessary when the axle shafts need to be replaced.

Instructions

    1

    Locate the axle shaft in your tire well. The axle shaft will have a large, grooved bearing near the center of your tire.

    Place one end of the measuring tape at the edge of the grooved bearing of the axle shaft. Have someone hold the tape measure in place.

    3

    Extend the tape measure across the axle bearing until you reach the connected tire. Measure the length based on the distance from one tires grooved bearing to the other tires grooved bearing.

How to Measure V-Belt Size

On their own, v belts (also called vee belts or fan belts) look like large, heavy-duty rubber bands. The name derives from the v-shaped cross-section that sits in the groove of a wheel in a pulley system (the belt sits deeper as its workload increases in weight). V-belts are essential components in many auto parts such as auto-steering columns, water pumps, air conditioners and other systems that require little to moderate amounts of force. V-belts come in a wide range of sizes and proper measuring will determine the appropriate replacement part.

Instructions

    1

    To measure a v-belt that is still on the machine, unwind a length of string or rope and wrap it around the length of the belt surrounding the pulley.

    When the string wraps around the entire circumference of the belt, use a marker to clearly mark the end as it meets the beginning portion. This allows for less room for measuring errors later on.

    Align the string with a tape measure across a flat surface, pulling tightly on the string so that it runs smoothly across the length of the tape.

    4

    Read the number on the tape measure to determine the size of your v-belt. Subtract 2 inches from that number to determine the belts inner circumference.

How to Measure Compression Springs

Compression springs store energy when a force shortens them. The energy stored in the spring releases after the force is removed to extend the spring and push against the object that compressed it. More compression and shortening of a spring equals more force when the spring releases. Compression springs are used in automotive suspension, clock springs and spring mattresses. Measuring a compression spring correctly allows you to purchase a replacement spring in the correct size.

Instructions

    1

    Hold the spring vertical in one hand. Open the jaws on the digital calipers and place one jaw on the spring top and one on the bottom of the spring to touch the ends. Write down the free spring length in thousandths. This is the length of the spring when it is not compressed.

    2

    Measure the outside diameter of the spring by placing the jaws of the digital calipers on each side of one end of the spring. Close the calipers to touch the sides and record the measurement in thousandths.

    3

    Place the digital caliper jaws inside the opening in the compression spring middle. Spread the jaws out to touch each side and record the measurement in thousandths as the inside diameter.

    4

    Measure the diameter of the spring wire by placing the caliper jaws on one coil and closing the jaws. Write down this measurement.

    5

    Count each full coil on the spring by touching them with a pencil, starting on one end and counting to the other end. Record this number as the amount of active coils.

    6

    Order a new compression spring using all of the measurements that you took.
