How to Remove a Heat Shield Problem in a Catalytic Converter

The catalytic converter installed on your vehicle is an important component in your vehicles emissions system. These converters generate a large amount of heat, so the underside of the vehicle typically has a heat shield bolted to the body to help dissipate some of that heat. Should this metal heat shield bend or get damaged, then it will rattle against the catalytic converter, which can damage the converter as well as make a horrible noise. To fix the problem, you need to remove the heat shield from the car to either fix the shield or replace it.

Instructions

    Lift the vehicle using the jack and put it onto a set of jack stands so that you have enough room to fit underneath the vehicle. Let the exhaust cool down if the vehicle has been run recently so that you dont burn yourself.

    Crawl underneath the vehicle and locate the catalytic converter, which is an oval shaped section of the exhaust tubing located before the muffler on the exhaust system.

    Unbolt the metal heat shield from around the catalytic converter using an open-end wrench. Pull the metal heat shield out from behind the catalytic converter and then take it out from under the vehicle.

How to Install an Exhaust Heat Wrap

Your vehicles exhaust is designed to expel all of the hot gases from the engine and push it out through the tailpipe. As a result, it gets pretty toasty under your vehicle, and that heat can transfer through the cab, making the interior that much hotter. To cool down these temps and keep your exhaust heat in the exhaust, installing exhaust heat wrap is the way to go. Its like wrapping a cast, but without the broken bones.

Instructions

    Lift up the vehicle using the jack and place it on jack stands. Make sure the vehicle is secure before you crawl underneath it. Allow the vehicle to completely cool off before working on the exhaust.

    Slide underneath the vehicle and locate the exhaust. Take the exhaust wrap and place the end of it onto the exhaust. While holding it still with one hand, loop the wrap around the exhaust, forming a perfect circle around the piece of wrap youre holding, securing it in place. Then wrap the material around one more time, this time, weaving it down the exhaust at a 45-degree angle.

    Connect the hose clamp around the end of the exhaust wrap where it makes a circle around the exhaust, and tighten it down using the flathead screwdriver. This will keep the exhaust wrap secured on the exhaust tubing, and make sure it doesnt wander.

    Continue wrapping the material around the exhaust tubing, making sure to pull on it at each rotation to keep it tight against the tubing. When the wrap is about to run out, wrap it around the tubing in a circular motion like in step 2, and then secure it with a hose clamp like in step 3.

    Repeat steps 2 through 4 for any additional exhaust tubing you want to wrap. You can also do this with your headers if you like, which can help aid in performance gains.
