How to Install the Timing Belt in a 1989 Mazda Pickup Model 2200

The Mazda B Series is a line of pickup trucks that Mazda Motor Corporation has manufactured since 1961. The number in the model name indicates the displacement of the engine, so the B2200 has a 2.2-liter engine. This engine has a single overhead camshaft, and uses a timing belt to coordinate the opening and closing of the cylinder valves. The replacement of the timing belt in a 1989 Mazda B2200 is part of its routine maintenance schedule.

Instructions

    1

    Remove the cable from the negative battery terminal with a socket wrench, and detach the accessory drive belts. Disconnect the covers for the timing belt.

    Turn the crankshaft clockwise to align the A mark on the camshaft pulley with the timing mark on the camshaft housing. Disconnect the mounting bolts for the crankshaft pulley with a socket wrench, and remove the pulley from the crankshaft.

    3

    Detach the spring for the timing belt tensioner with a pair of brake pliers. Disconnect the mounting bolt from the timing belt tensioner with a socket wrench and remove the tensioner. Disconnect the timing belt from its pulleys.

    4

    Place a T-wrench onto one of the housing bolts for the camshaft pulley. Place another T-wrench on the mounting bolt for the pulley and disconnect the mounting bolt. Remove the camshaft pulley from the camshaft.

    5

    Install the new timing belt and align the timing marks on the camshaft pulley if necessary. Ensure that the timing belt engages the teeth on the sprockets of the camshaft, crankshaft and belt tensioner.

    Install the mounting bolt for the belt tensioner and tighten it by hand. Install the tensioner spring, and loosen the lock bolt for the belt tensioner with a socket wrench.

    Turn the crankshaft clockwise by two turns and align the timing marks. Tighten the locking bolt on the timing belt to between 28 and 38 ft. lbs. with a torque wrench. Turn the timing belt tensioner to adjust the tension on the timing belt. The timing belt should deflect by about 12mm when you apply a force of 22 lbs. to the longest span of the timing belt.

    Replace the covers for the timing belt with a socket wrench, and attach the accessory drive belts. Connect the cable to the negative battery terminal.

How to Replace the Cylinder Head Gasket in a 2000 Chevy Pickup

The Chevrolet Silverado is a full-size pickup truck that has been in production since 1998. It is available with several types of V-6 and V-8 engines, which have a cylinder head on each side of the engine. The procedure for replacing the cylinder head gasket varies slightly, depending on which cylinder head you must remove. These procedures are generally the same for the 4.3-liter, 4.8-liter and 5.3-liter engines in the 2000 Chevrolet pickup.

Instructions

    1

    Disconnect the negative battery cable using the socket wrench. Detach the bleed pipe for the coolant from the right cylinder head. Disconnect the intake manifold and remove the push rods from the engine. Remove the exhaust manifolds from the engine.

    Remove the mounting bolts that attach the alternator bracket to the left cylinder head with a socket wrench. Disconnect the mounting bolt for the alternator bracket that is behind the power steering pump, and push the bracket aside with the alternator still attached.

    3

    Disconnect the bolt that attaches the oil level tube to the right cylinder head with a socket wrench. Detach the oil level tube from the right cylinder head, and unscrew the spark plugs from the cylinder head.

    4

    Remove the mounting bolts for the cylinder head with a socket wrench, and discard the 11-mm mounting bolts. Lift the cylinder head from the engine and discard the cylinder head gasket.

    5

    Clean the bolt holes on the engine block with GM spray cleaner, part number 12346139, and blow the holes clear with compressed air. Remove the thread-locking material from the 8-mm mounting bolts with the GM driver tool, part number J 42385-107. Place the new gasket for the cylinder head over the locating pins on the engine block, then install the cylinder head over the locating pins.

    Fasten new 11-mm mounting bolts to the cylinder head by hand. Apply a 0.2-inch bead of GM thread lock compound, part number 12345382, to the threads of the 8-mm bolts, and fasten them by hand.

    Tighten the 11-mm bolts to 22 foot-pounds with a torque wrench on the first pass. Tighten the 11-mm bolts an additional 90 degrees on the second pass, then tighten them another 70 degrees on the third pass. Tighten the 8-mm bolts to 22 foot-pounds, beginning with the center bolt. Work your way outward on the 8-mm bolts, alternating from side to side.

    Connect the oil level tube to the right cylinder head with a socket wrench. Mount the bracket for the alternator and tighten its bolts to 37 foot-pounds with a torque wrench, including the mounting bolt below the power steering pump. Connect the exhaust manifolds to the engine, and install the push rods. Attach the bleed pipe for the coolant to the right cylinder head, and connect the negative battery cable.

How Do I Troubleshoot the ABS in a Chevy Light Pickup

The anti-lock braking system (ABS) in your Chevy light pickup truck helps to prevent your wheels from locking up when you slam on the brakes. This gives you some control during an emergency braking maneuver, regardless of the road conditions. Sometimes this system may malfunction, and you will know this by the ABS light showing up on your instrument panel. You can troubleshoot the problem yourself before doing the repairs yourself or taking it to a mechanic.

Instructions

    1

    Locate the fuse panel cover under the steering column on the dashboard. Open the cover by pulling down on it from the top.

    2

    Look for the fuse puller inside the fuse panel and remove it. Read the diagram on the bottom part of the fuse panel cover to locate the ABS fuse. Use the fuse puller to remove this fuse.

    3

    Examine the fuse to see if it has blown. You can tell if it has blown by looking at the wire inside the fuse which will be severed. If this is the case, replace it with a new fuse of the same amperage.

    4

    Insert the key into the ignition and start the engine. If the ABS light stays lit on the instrument panel, then you probably have a malfunction in the ABS. Have the vehicle towed to a qualified mechanic or do the repairs yourself if you know how. Do not drive the vehicle until it has been repaired.

How to Replace the Thermostat on a 91 Nissan Pickup

The cooling system on the 1991 Nissan pickups come equipped with a thermostat that regulates the engines temperature. The thermostat is made up of a temperature-sensitive spring that moves the thermostat up and down in reaction to the temperature of the coolant. When the engine is running, the thermostat regulates the coolant flow from the radiator to the engine, allowing only the proper amount of coolant throughout the engine block. If the thermostat sticks, replace it as soon as possible.

Instructions

    1

    Park the 1991 Nissan pickup on a level surface. Set the parking brake and open the hood.

    2

    Locate the top radiator hose that runs from the top of the radiator to the engine block. Follow the top radiator hose from the radiator to the thermostat housing. The hose is attached to the thermostat housing tube. Slide the fluid catch pan underneath the engine in the general area of the thermostat housing.

    Loosen the hose clamp by turning the adjustable screw head counterclockwise with a flat-head screwdriver. Pull the clamp about 6 inches up onto the radiator hose. Twist the hose back and forth with your hand until it loosens from the thermostat housing tube. Pull the hose straight off the tube.

    Loosen and remove the two mounting bolts from the thermostat housing with a ratchet and a socket. Pull the thermostat housing off the engine block and place it on a clean rag.

    5

    Pull the thermostat straight up out of the engine block. Scrape any of the old gasket off the base of the thermostat housing and the engine block with a flat scraper. Wipe the thermostat housing base and the engine block clean with a clean rag.

    6

    Place the thermostat gasket over the bottom of the thermostat housing base and push the two housing bolts through the holes to hold the gasket in place. Insert the new thermostat into the top of the engine block with the spring facing downward. Lower the housing back over the engine block. Screw the two mounting bolts into the engine block until tight. Finish tightening the bolts with the ratchet and socket.

    Push the top radiator hose back over the thermostat housing tube. Position the hose clamp over the hose and over the thermostat housing tube. Tighten the clamp with the screwdriver until the hose is tightly secured to the thermostat housing tube.

    8

    Remove the radiator cap and add coolant as needed until the radiator is full. Crank the engine and let it run until the engine is at operating temperature or until the coolant level drops inside of the radiator. This will show that the thermostat is working properly. Inspect the thermostat housing and the top radiator hose for any leaks while the engine is running. Add more coolant if needed to fill the radiator up with the engine running.

    Turn the engine off and pull the fluid catch pan out from under the truck.

How to Change the Belts on a 1995 Nissan Pickup

The hard body Nissan pickups were built between 1986 and 1997. The 1995 Nissan Pickup comes equipped with two separate belts that operate all of the engine accessories. The first belt is a serpentine belt and the second belt is a v-belt. These belts operate the alternator, power steering pump, air conditioner compressor and the cooling fan at the same time. Over time the serpentine belt and the v-belt will fray and crack. Change the belt as soon as the fraying or cracking is evident to prevent the belts from breaking.

Instructions

Replacing the Serpentine Belt

    1

    Open the hood and make note of the serpentine belt routing diagram. This diagram holds the instructions for how the serpentine belt is routed around each pulley. Use this diagram to properly route the new belt around the pulleys.

    2

    locate the serpentine belt on the front of the engine. The serpentine belt is a single belt with ribs on the inside of the belt that travel inside of the pulleys. The serpentine belt is tightened by a spring loaded tensioner on the front left hand side of the engine. Use the bolt head that secures the pulley to the bottom of the tensioner to relieve the tension from the belt.

    Position a metric socket and a breaker bar onto the tensioner pulley bolt. Turn the breaker bar counter-clockwise to release the tension from the belt. Slide the belt off of the tensioner pulley and release the breaker bar.

    4

    Pull the serpentine belt out of the other accessory pulleys and out of the engine bay. Route the new serpentine belt around the same pulleys as described by the belt routing diagram. Put the breaker bar and socket back onto the tensioner pulley bolt. Rotate the breaker bar counter-clockwise and slide the new belt around the tensioner pulley. Release the breaker bar and remove it from the engine bay.

Replacing the V-Belt

    5

    Locate the v-belt that is routed around the remaining accessory pulleys. The v-belt is tightened by an adjustment bracket on top of the alternator. Loosen the bolt in the middle of the adjustment bracket with a ratchet and a metric socket.

    Loosen the top alternator mounting bolt with the ratchet and socket.

    7

    Turn the adjustment bolt at the end of the adjustment bracket counter-clockwise until the belt is loose. Pull the belt out of the accessory pulleys and out of the engine bay.

    8

    Route the new v-belt around the accessory pulleys. Tighten the belt by turning the adjustment bolt clockwise with the ratchet and socket. Check the tension of the belt by pushing inward on the belt with your hand. The belt should have no more than a half-inch of slack. Adjust the belt as needed to get a half-inch of tension in the belt. Tighten the bolt in the middle of the adjustment bracket and the top alternator mounting bolt with the ratchet and socket.

    Crank the engine for fifteen to twenty seconds. Turn the engine off and inspect the belts. Make sure that the serpentine belt is properly inside of each pulley. Make sure that the v-belt is inside of each pulley and also recheck the tension of the v-belt with your hand. Close the hood.

How Do I Change the Fuel Pump on a 1988 Ford F 250 Pickup

The Ford F-series is a line of full-size pickup trucks that has been in continuous production since 1948. The F designator indicates that the vehicle has an F-style body, and the 250 designator means that its a 3/4-ton pickup truck. The 1988 Ford F250 pickups have a variety of engines, usually an 8-cylinder 5.8L engine or an 8-cylinder 7.5L engine. All versions of the 1988 F250 use a low-pressure fuel pump mounted to the fuel tank.

Instructions

    1

    Disconnect the cable on the batterys negative terminal with a socket wrench, and loosen the filler cap on the fuel tank. Remove the valve cap for the fuel pressure relief valve on the fuel line. Connect pressure gauge T80L-9974-A to to the valve, and open the gauge to relieve the pressure in the fuel system. Remove the pressure gauge and replace the valve cap.

    Siphon the fuel from the fuel tank into a gasoline container with a siphon hose. Disconnect the electrical wiring for the fuel gauge sending unit wire. Detach the fuel line and air relief tube from the fuel tank. Release the clamp for the filler neck on the fuel tank, and disconnect the filler neck. Remove the mounting nuts on the fuel tanks retaining strap, and remove the fuel tank from the vehicle.

    3

    Detach the electrical connector from the fuel pump assembly, and clean the surface of the fuel tank around the fuel pump assembly with a shop rag. Disconnect the fuel lines from the fuel pump assembly. Turn the locking ring on the fuel pump assembly counterclockwise with a wooden dowel and hammer, and remove the locking ring. Pull the fuel pump assembly out of the fuel tank, and discard the gasket on the fuel tank.

    4

    Install a new gasket into the groove on the fuel tank, and place the new fuel pump assembly into the fuel tank. Attach the locking ring to the fuel pump assembly, and turn it clockwise with the hammer and dowel until the locking ring stops against the retainer ring tab.

    5

    Connect the fuel lines and electrical connection to the fuel pump assembly. Install the fuel tank, and tighten the nuts on the fuel tanks retaining strap to 30 ft.-lbs. with a torque wrench. Fill the fuel tank with fuel, and connect the cable to the negative battery terminal.

How to Replace a Passenger Side Mirror on a 2002 Tundra Pickup

The 2002 Toyota Tundra has very large side view mirrors to minimize blind spots while hauling large loads in the truck bed or towing trailers. The mirrors make it easier to drive, but also make the mirror glass more vulnerable to passing vehicles or objects that could crack the thick plastic. Fortunately, side view mirrors attach to the mirror adjustment motor in the same manner as a ball and socket joint. The back of the mirror has a round socket molded into to it and the top of the mirror motor has a ball molded onto it. The two pieces press together to allow the mirror to pivot in the mirror housing during adjustments.

Instructions

    1

    Turn one side of the mirror into the housing like you would when adjusting it. If changing the drivers side mirror, push in on the right side of the mirror. If adjusting the passenger side mirror on the Tundra, push in on the left side of the mirror. When you push one side of the mirror into the housing, it causes the other side of the mirror to extend out of the housing. This allows access to the back of the mirror. Make the adjustment with the mirror motor via the electronic adjuster on the inner door panel or do it by pushing on the glass with your hand.

    Squeeze your fingers behind the Tundras side view mirror and pull outward on it to separate the ball and socket connector. It takes a small amount of pressure to break the two apart. However, you will not damage the mirror motor.

    3

    Place the new mirror into the housing. The mirror is a tight fit inside the housing. Because of the tight fit, the ball and socket connector automatically lines up.

    4

    Push on the face of the Tundras mirror with the ball of your fist until the ball and socket pop together. You hear a small pop as the two press together. This lets you know the mirror is securely attached to the motor.
