How to Use a Welding Positioner

Welding longitudinal seams and seams around the circumference of round pipe requires a welder to reposition the material while performing the weld. A welding positioner holds the material in place and moves it as the welder performs the weld. Controls on the positioner allow the welder to change the movement speed of the material and the direction of movement. Securing the material and using the positioner correctly ensures the safety of the person performing the weld and protects the material from damage.

Instructions

Set up the welding positioner in an open area near a power source. Plug in the power cord from the welding positioner into the power source.

Turn the bolts securing the holding arms to the bed of the welding positioner counterclockwise with a wrench. Pull the arms away from the bed. Slide a metal weld piece under the holding arms of the welding positioner. Tighten the bolts of the holding arm with the wrench to secure the metal weld piece to the welding positioner.

Set up a MIG welder to weld the metal secured to the welding positioner. Align the tip of the MIG gun with the weld joint of the welder. Depress the pedal of the welding positioner to rotate or move the metal weld piece as you weld along the joint.

Decrease pressure on the pedal to slow the movement of the welding positioner or increase pressure on the pedal to increase the positioner movement speed.

Loosen the holding arm bolts with a wrench when the metal has cooled for 30 minutes.
