How to Clean Oxidized Headlamp Lenses

Nearly all vehicles are susceptible to oxidation in their headlight lenses. Being exposed to ultraviolet rays, road sand and exhaust makes oxidation impossible to avoid, and has led to an entire industry of products and methods to remove and prevent this foggy nuisance. Non-abrasive compounds are your best bet for this activity, and you should take care not to scratch or damage the lens by using toothpaste or sandpaper unless the oxidation is severe. If left untreated, the yellowish coating can become permanent, reducing the appeal and resale value of your vehicle.

Instructions

    1

Protect the bumper and hood around the headlight with blue painters tape. The de-oxidizing compound is harmful to paint, and the tape will prevent any accidentally spilled solution from causing harm.

    2

Dab a small amount of de-oxidizing solution onto a clean rag and rub it lightly on the plastic lens. For light oxidation, one or two applications should be plenty to clear up the polycarbonate lens.

    3

Continue applying solution in a horizontal motion. It may take several coats for stubborn oxidation to clear up. Yellow stains indicate the worst oxidation and are often impossible to remove using a compound. Light sandpaper may be a last resort before replacing the headlight altogether.

    4

Sand in horizontal motions using 1,000 grit sandpaper to remove yellowish oxidation stains. Wipe down the headlight with a wet sponge to remove the dirt and debris that was removed. Follow that with 2,000 grit sandpaper, and wipe second time. Apply a coat of polish to the headlight in the same horizontal motion to fill in the tiny grooves made by the sandpaper.
