The 22R, 22RE and 22R-TE were without a doubt the most popular engines Toyota ever sold in America, reigning for two decades as the companys budget-priced workhorses. The rugged and dependable R-series all but created Toyotas image as we know it today, and continues as a favorite among off-roaders worldwide. The 97- to 112-horsepower carbureted 22R, 118-horsepower fuel-injected 22RE and 135-horsepower turbocharged 22R-TE werent powerhouses by anyones standards.

Instructions

    Identify the engine block. The short block is the engines main sub-assembly, and is composed of the engine block, crankshaft, connecting rods and pistons.

    Identify the cylinder head, which is bolted to the top of the engine block. Simply put, a "long block" is the short block plus the cylinder head. If the engine has a block, crankshaft, rods, pistons and a cylinder head, then its a long block. Most engine shops consider the valve assembly and cams as part of the long block, and will typically sell them that way unless otherwise specified. The camshaft/crankshaft sprockets and timing chain are typically sold as part of the long block assembly because the engine needs them to function.

    Verify that it is, in fact, a 22R. Look on the engine block below the first brass freeze plug for the "22R" on the casting number plate. Other R-series blocks include the 18R, 16R, 10R, 9R, 8R, all the way down to 1R. Contrary to popular practice among Japanese automakers such as Mitsubishi, the engine designation indicated the engine generation rather than the displacement in liters. The 1R was first produced in 1953, the 2R in 1964 and so on.

How to Put a Fan Belt on a 2000 Mitsubishi Galant

Replacing the belt on your 2000 Galant should be part of the regular maintenance plan for your vehicle. The serpentine belt on your Mitsubishi turns all the accessories on the front of the engine, and a failure could leave you stranded on the side of the road. The alternator would stop turning, leaving the ignition to draw power from the battery until it died. The water pump would not spin, allowing the engine to overheat, and the power steering would stop working. Change the belt at the first sign of damage or excess wear.

Instructions

    1

    Locate the battery in your Galant. Remove the retaining bolt from the negative cable end with a wrench and lift the cable off the battery. Tuck it aside so that it cannot fall back against the battery terminals.

    Move to the front of the engine and locate the bolt that runs through the center of the serpentine belt tensioner pulley. Loosen the bolt with a socket and ratchet but do not remove it completely. Locate the adjuster bolt at the base of the tensioner.

    Loosen the adjuster bolt with a socket and ratchet by turning it counterclockwise until the belt is loose enough to remove from the pulley. Slide the old belt off the pulleys and discard it.

    Slide the new serpentine belt over the pulleys, making sure you route the belt properly. There is a belt-path diagram on the radiator support that will help if you need it. Turn the adjusting bolt on the tensioner clockwise until the belt is tight. Tighten the locking bolt in the center of the tensioner pulley with a socket and ratchet.

    Reattach the negative battery cable on the negative terminal and tighten the retaining bolt with a wrench. Close the hood and recheck the tension on the belt after driving the car for a few days.

How to Install a 3800 Fuel Injector O-Ring

The General Motors 3800 engine is a 3.8-liter V-6. This engine is installed across a variety of GM vehicles, though is primarily found in the Pontiac and Buick vehicle lines. The 3800 engines fuel injectors operate in conjunction with a pressurized fuel system. At the top and bottom of each injector, an o-ring acts as a seal to ensure fuel does not leak. Damaged or degraded o-rings may cause fuel leaks and fire hazards. O-ring replacement is recommended if they are leaking or any time the injector is removed from the fuel rail or engine.

Instructions

Remove the Injectors

    1

    Remove the electronic plug from the fuel safety cut-off switch to turn off the fuel pump. The cut-off switch location can be found in your vehicles owners manual.

    Depressurize the fuel system by attempting to start the car three times, for 3 to 5 seconds each time. Allow a 10-second pause between attempts to allow the starter to cool. Without re-pressurization from the fuel pump, the existing pressure in the fuel lines will be reduced due to fuel consumption by the engine.

    Disconnect the negative battery terminal.

    Locate the fuel rails and remove any engine shrouds, intake tubes, vacuum lines or bolt-on accessories to allow access. Unbolt the fuel rail from the engine if your vehicles rails are secured.

    Disconnect the fuel injector electronics plug. Disconnect the fuel rails by pulling upward and away from the top of the fuel injector. Some fuel will spill. Allow it to evaporate, or wipe it away, before continuing.

    6

    Pull upward on the fuel injector to remove from the engine. The fuel injector may need to be rocked slightly to allow the bottom o-ring to disengage.

Install the O-rings

    7

    Remove the o-rings from the injectors by sliding them off the top and bottom of the injector.

    8

    Wipe away any dirt or debris from the injector o-ring seal point.

    Lubricate the new o-ring with a light coating of motor oil. The motor oil will not only make it easier to slide on, it will protect the o-ring once installed. Apply a small amount of motor oil to your finger and wipe over the entire surface of each o-ring.

    Slide the o-rings onto the fuel injector.

Replace the Injectors

    Push the injector into the engine hole until the o-ring is fully seated. A properly seated injector will resist removal.

    Push the fuel rail or fuel line directly down on top of the fuel injector. Misaligned pressure may cause small tears in the injector creating future leak points. Connect all fuel injectors.

    Replace the electronics plug on each fuel injector. Secure the fuel rail to the engine, if required. Attach any bolt-on accessories, vacuum hoses, and intake tubes. Reconnect the fuel safety shut-off switch electronics plug. Reconnect the car battery.

    14

    Turn the ignition switch to the electronics mode. Allow the fuel pump to pressurize the fuel system. With the ignition switch in the electronics mode, the pressurization should take 3 to 5 seconds. Turn off the key and repeat this step twice.

    15

    Inspect the fuel system for leaks. Return to Section 1, if necessary. Replace the engine shroud. Start the vehicle to confirm installation.

How do I Read the Codes on a 1993 Mazda 626?

You can read the trouble codes on your 93 Mazda 626 right from your home garage, saving your time and money. The On-Board Diagnostics II computer (OBDII) comes standard on the Mazda 626. This computer receives trouble codes from sensors positioned throughout the vehicle that monitor all of the cars functions. When it receives a trouble code, it alerts you by illuminating a warning or service light on the vehicles instrument panel. When you see one of these lights, you can read the codes using an OBDII scanner to pinpoint the problem.

Instructions

    1

    Put the key into the ignition and turn it to the "II" position. Dont start the engine.

    Look for an open port on the lower drivers-side dashboard, near the steering column. Plug the scanner into the port. The vehicles electrical system will power on the OBDII scanner. Wait for the codes to appear on the scanner.

    Write down the codes on a piece of paper and look them up in the booklet that came with the scanner. The numerical codes will be translated into descriptions.

    Unplug the scanner and turn off the vehicle. Take the codes and descriptions to your mechanic to have your vehicle serviced or repaired.

What Is Included in an Automobile Tune Up?

A tune up ers to preventive maintenance that focuses on the cars engine. At the most basic level, a tuneup is replacing specific parts in a specific time frame.

What is a tune up?

    A tune up will always replace: spark plugs, fuel filter, spark plug wires, ignition rotor and distributor cap (if the car is so equipped). Additionally, the throttle bore and throttle plate should be cleaned and adjusted. Performing this maintenance keeps clean air and fuel moving into the engine, in addition to ensuring that the spark plugs ignite the fuel at optimal levels.

When do I perform a tune up?

    It depends on how your car is equipped. Platinum tipped spark plugs can last up to 100,000 miles. Cheaper plugs may last only 30,000 miles.

Can I do this myself?

    There are many guide books and websites that can teach you to perform your own tune ups. A tune up is about as simple as modern car maintenance can get. A tune up is also fairly cheap to have done at a reputable auto shop. Doing your own tune up depends on your individual comfort level.

Jeep Cherokee Dash Removal

Removing the dashboard on your Jeep Cherokee is a simple, but finicky task. The Jeep Cherokee dashboard includes the lower instrument panel, instrument cluster bezel, radio and heater control panel, and defroster cowl panel.

Remove the Lower Instrument Panel

    Remove the lower instrument panel first by removing its four retaining screws. Lower the panel and disconnect all the wire connectors attached to it. Make a note of where each wire connector attaches.

Remove the Instrument Cluster Bezel

    Remove the four screws that hold the instrument cluster bezel in place. Unsnap the cluster bezel at the eight snap fit locations. Be gentle on older models of Cherokees to prevent breaking the snaps as they keep the bezel firmly in place and stops it from making annoying rattling noises.

Remove the Radio and Heater Control Panel

    Unscrew the two screws holding this panel in place. Pull the radio control panel out and disconnect the electrical connectors to the radio. Pull out the heater control unit.

Remove the Defroster Cowl Panel

    Loosen and remove the four screws holding the defroster cowl panel in place. The cowl panel has retaining clips on the drivers side, which must also be removed. Take care not to let the clips fall off the panel when you remove it.

Installing New Headlights on a 2003 Ford F 150

Ford uses halogen light bulbs housed within a headlamp assembly for forward illumination on the 2003 F-150 model vehicles. The bulb plugs into the headlamp assembly and is held in place by a headlamp bulb retainer, which serves to seal and isolate the headlamp assembly from the atmosphere. Over time, the filaments within the bulb can break due to vibration. Replace the bulb without the benefit of tools.

Instructions

Removal

    1

    Turn the ignition and headlamp switches to the Off position. Raise the hood.

    2

    Locate the two headlamp housing retainer tabs inside the engine compartment just behind and above the headlamp housing assembly. Pull the tabs slightly toward the rear of the vehicle and pull up on them to release the headlamp housing assembly.

    3

    Separate the headlamp housing from the front of the vehicle to expose the headlamp electrical connector on the back. Squeeze the locking tabs on the side of the electrical connector and unplug the connector from the headlamp bulb. Remove the headlamp assembly from the vehicle.

    Rotate the headlamp bulb retainer counterclockwise to unsnap it from the headlamp housing. Remove the headlamp bulb retainer. Grasp the headlamp bulb and pull it out of the headlamp housing.

Installation

    5

    Insert the new headlamp bulb into the headlamp housing with the flat side of the bulb connector facing up.

    6

    Install the headlamp bulb retainer into the back of the headlamp housing and rotate it clockwise until it snaps into place. Plug the headlamp electrical connector into the headlamp bulb and push it on until the connector snaps in position.

    7

    Guide the headlamp housing into position. Ensure that the headlamp assembly is aligned properly with the alignment pins on the back of the housing, inserted in the holes in the body and engaged with the reinforcement ribs around the edge of the headlamp housing recess. Push down on the headlamp housing retainer tabs until they snap into position.
