How to Connect Heated Side Mirrors

A heated side mirror is a useful feature that is included on many cars. The heat in the mirror helps to prevent the mirror from fogging up during inclement weather. Collisions and years of use can cause the heated side mirrors to become broken or ineffectual. Replacing a heated side mirror is easy to do. Visit your local dealer or auto parts store to purchase a replacement heated side mirror for your car. Once you have the mirror it should only take an hour or two to replace the mirror.

Instructions

    Open the front door. Find the screws that hold the door panel and mirror trim in place. Remove the screws with a screwdriver and remove both the door panel and the mirror trim.

    Find the screws that hold the existing side mirrors in place. Remove the screws with a screwdriver and set them aside. Disconnect the wires in the old mirrors. The wires should be connected in a cable that is simple to slide away from the wiring in the side mirror. Slip the old mirror out of place. Repeat with the other side mirror.

    Thread the wiring of the new heated side mirror through the hole in the door. Screw the mirror into place with the screws that you set aside. Connect the wires in the heated mirror to the wires in the door. The cables should connect easily. Replace the door panel and window trim and screw them into place with a screwdriver. Repeat with the other side mirror and door.

How to Connect Battery Cables

Many situations require you to connect a battery cable. Three such examples follow.

Instructions

Replacing the Battery Cables on Your Vehicles

    Remove the old cables from your battery by loosening the bolts on both cable ends with a wrench. Take both cables off the battery posts, starting with the negative cable.

    Disconnect the negative cable from the engine block. Remove the positive cable from the solenoid, relay or starter.

    Clean both battery posts with a wire brush. Connect the positive cable to the solenoid, relay or starter. Connect the other end to the battery post and tighten both ends with a wrench. Connect the negative battery cable to the engine block where you took it off. Connect the other end to the negative post on the battery and tighten both ends with a wrench.

    Clean both cables on the battery with a wire brush to get a good connection.

    Hook up to the positive (+)  post on the battery first.

    Connect one end of the jumper cables to the positive (+) side of the dead battery. Always start with the positive (+) cable. Connect the other end of the jumper cable to the positive (+) side of the fully charged battery.

    Connect the negative (-) side of the jumper cables to the fully charged battery first. Connect the other end of the jumper cable to the engine. Locate an unpainted bolt or nut and place the other end of the jumper cable on it, being sure the bolt or nut is free of grease and dirt. This will let you start your vehicle.

Connecting the Second Battery in the Vehicle

    Connect a second battery in parallel with the first battery, i.e., hook the negative (-) post from the first battery to the negative (-) post on the second battery first. Hook the positive (+) post from the first battery to the positive (+) post on the second battery.

    Remove the nut from the negative (-) cable and take the cable off the battery. Take the nut off the positive (+) cable end and place the eyelet of the new cable on the bolt, then replace the nut and tighten with a wrench. Place the other end of the cable on the positive (+) post on the second battery, tighten with a wrench.

    Connect one cable end to the negative (-) post of the second battery and tighten with a wrench. Place the other end with the eyelet on the negative (-) cable end bolt on the first battery and replace the nut. Reconnect the cable to the first battery and tighten nut with a wrench.

How to Connect an A C Compound Gauge

In order to charge an air conditioning system or diagnose problems with the system, you must know how to connect and read the compound, or manifold gauges, to the vehicle. The gauges on the manifold serve two functions. They show the technician how much pressure is in the system while the AC is on, or how many inches of vacuum are in the system when discharging or evacuating. The latter is important because it is the most economical way to check for leaks in the system. The connectors on the ends of the hoses are quick-connect type connectors and the lines are color coded, making proper connection almost foolproof.

Instructions

    1

    Remove the cap on the high side service port, generally located in a line that runs between the compressor and the condenser, somewhere close to the condenser at the front of the vehicle. Pull back on the quick-connect ring on the red hose and push the connector onto the port. Release the ring to secure the hose to the fitting.

    Remove the cap on the low side service port, generally located close to the firewall of the vehicle, and connect the blue hose in the same manner as the red hose.

    Screw on the connector at the end of the yellow hose to attach it to a vacuum pump if evacuating the system after repairs or testing the system for leaks. When charging the system, screw the connector on the end of the yellow hose onto either the fitting on a 30-pound tank of refrigerant or a tapping valve if using smaller cans of refrigerant, completing the connection of the compound gauges.
