Most cars equipped with an automatic transmission have a feature commonly known as "shift lock," which prevents the driver from shifting out of park when the car is off, when the foot brake isnt applied or when the cars computer senses damage to the engine or transmission. Whatever the situation, sometimes the driver has to override a locked transmission in order to move the car.
Instructions
1 Apply pressure to the foot brake, and turn the engine on.
2 Attempt to shift from park. Sometimes the car rolls backwards during parking, causing the shifter to be slightly stuck, not "locked." If it doesnt budge, its probably the shift lock.
3 Turn off the engine.
4 Search "shift lock" in the index of your Audis manual. Over the years, Audi has used different types of shift locks, two of the most common being an actual button near the shifter, and the other requiring the removal of the plastic panel surrounding the shifter.
5 Depress the shift-lock override button. If the button or mechanism is under the panel that surrounds the shifter, follow your manuals instructions to remove the panel.
6 Shift the car into neutral while still holding or pressing the shift lock override and with pressure still applied to the brake.
7 Turn on the engine while the car is in neutral, and shift into drive or reverse.

Key lock inserts use evenly spaced metal "keys" to lock the insert in material. The "keys" bind to the base material when set with a specified tool. Threading a tap into a key locked insert will not fix damaged threads. Correctly removing the damaged insert will keep the threads in the base material intact, reducing the time required to install a new key lock insert.
Instructions
1 Find the size of the key lock threaded insert on a key lock chart. Move across the chart to determine the drill bit size required to remove the insert.
2 Secure the proper drill bit in a drill motor chuck. Cover the drill bit with cutting fluid.
3 Drill into the threaded insert to the depth specified on the key lock chart.
4 Slide a flathead screwdriver into the threaded insert. Align the tip of the screwdriver with one of the key locks. Pry the remaining portion of each key lock toward the center of the insert.
5 Secure a spiral bolt extractor into the drill motor chuck. Set the drill to reverse. Insert the extractor into the opening of the threaded insert. Push the drill toward the threaded insert while pulling the drill trigger to remove the insert from the threaded base material.

Ignition lock cylinders come in different styles. The two most common are the complete assembly and the simple mechanism. The complete assembly consists of the tumbler, the ignition switch and the wiring. Some models may have additional components. The simple mechanism usually is just the tumbler assembly. Either one should come with a set of keys. Remember to keep your old key to open the doors. Very few models can be adjusted to fit your current key.
Instructions
1 Disconnect the battery. Allow at least 30 minutes to pass (check your vehicles particular specifications); this will allow the airbag capacitor to drain. If this step is skipped, the air bag could deploy.
2 Remove drivers side lower kick panel. Visually inspect all wiring coming from the steering column. Do not disturb or disconnect any wires wrapped in yellow or yellow connectors ---these are for the airbag. If any nicks, breaks or burns are found repair them before continuing.
3 Remove the upper and lower panels of the steering column. Locate the ignition lock cylinder, it should be located on the right-hand side of the column. Some models require you to insert the key for removal. If it is a simple tumbler it should be held in place by a retainer clip, tabs or a clamp. Using a pick, remove the clip or depress the tabs. The tumbler should slide out of its barrel.
4 Find the bolts that attach the assembly to the column and remove them, if it is a complete assembly. Unplug the electrical connector and replace.
5 Route all wires so they wont be seen from the outside or be pinched by the panels. Finish all interior work before reconnecting the battery. If any problems arise use the multimeter to search for voltage drops.
