Chevrolet is the manufacturer of the Camaro, a two-door sports car. Introduced in 1967, the Camaro was one of Chevys major sellers until the company shut down production of the Camaro in 2002, which was declining in popularity. In 2010, the Camaro was re-introduced. If you are the owner of a Chevy Camaro and you need to have a new car key cut for your Camaro youll need to obtain certain information.
Instructions
1 Locate the vehicle identification number (VIN) of your Camaro. This number is located on your purchase paperwork, your registration and your insurance card. The VIN will allow Chevrolet to acquire your key code, which tells the key maker exactly how to cut your new key to fit in your vehicle.
2 Visit your local Chevy dealerships service and/or parts department. Chevrolets official website allows you to input your zip code to locate the Chevy dealership nearest you.
3 Give the service/parts department at Chevy your VIN, your Camaros registration and your photo identification. This information is needed to prove ownership of the vehicle, as Chevy will not cut keys, even with the VIN, without proof of ownership as a theft deterrent. Wait while your key is cut, which only takes a few minutes, and pay for your new keys.

Most automobiles are sold with multiple sets of keys. It is possible to misplace all the keys for your car. If you do lose all your cars keys, it is often possible to take the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to a dealer for a replacement key. A locksmith can be expensive and should be your option of last resort. If you present the VIN and proof of ownership to a dealer, they can get a replacement key from the manufacturer.
Instructions
1 Locate the VIN and note it. An autos VIN is usually stamped on a metal plate near the drivers side of the dashboard. The VIN can also be found inside the engine compartment, stamped on the engine or on a metal tag attached to the engine.
2 Take the VIN along with personal photo identification and proof of ownership to a dealer for that particular model of vehicle.
3 Present your proof of ownership to the dealer. A registration or title in your name, indicating the VIN, is the best proof of ownership.
4 Wait while the dealer contacts the manufacturer and has a duplicate key made. This process can take anywhere from a few hours to a few days.

Key lock inserts use evenly spaced metal "keys" to lock the insert in material. The "keys" bind to the base material when set with a specified tool. Threading a tap into a key locked insert will not fix damaged threads. Correctly removing the damaged insert will keep the threads in the base material intact, reducing the time required to install a new key lock insert.
Instructions
1 Find the size of the key lock threaded insert on a key lock chart. Move across the chart to determine the drill bit size required to remove the insert.
2 Secure the proper drill bit in a drill motor chuck. Cover the drill bit with cutting fluid.
3 Drill into the threaded insert to the depth specified on the key lock chart.
4 Slide a flathead screwdriver into the threaded insert. Align the tip of the screwdriver with one of the key locks. Pry the remaining portion of each key lock toward the center of the insert.
5 Secure a spiral bolt extractor into the drill motor chuck. Set the drill to reverse. Insert the extractor into the opening of the threaded insert. Push the drill toward the threaded insert while pulling the drill trigger to remove the insert from the threaded base material.

Losing your car keys is never a great way to start your day, especially if youre without a spare car key. Fortunately, replacing your car keys is not a difficult process. If your car is an older model, the process is simpler than replacing keys on newer model cars with special transponder keys. To replace your keys you will need to contact your car dealerships service department to order a new key.
Instructions
1 Locate and make note of the vehicle identification number (VIN) on your car. If your car is a late model vehicle, having the VIN is imperative to have as it provides the key code to your specific car. The person cutting your new keys will need this code to cut them correctly for your cars ignition.
2 Contact a locksmith or your vehicle dealership to order a new key. A locksmith who works with car keys can help you if your car is an earlier model. If you have a late model vehicle with a transponder key -- a keyless entry system -- youll have to contact your car dealership. These keys are only available through authorized dealerships for security reasons.
3 Pick up your new key. Depending on your dealers inventory, your key might be in stock or your key might have to be ordered. Your dealership will program your new keys for you.

The stylish Porsche cars come equipped with a remote entry system for controlling the door locks and alarm system. The system is controlled by a wireless transmitter in the Porsche key fob. This device has three buttons: lock, unlock and a panic alarm button. Before you can use the key fob with your car you must program it to work. Most keyless transmitters come already programmed from the Porsche dealership, but you can also reprogram it yourself using the ignition key and the security code.
Instructions
1 Enter the Porsche by the drivers seat and be sure everything is closed. This includes all doors, boot lids and bonnet.
2 Insert the key into the ignition and turn it clockwise until you start the Porsche engine.
3 Turn the 911 engine off and remove the key from ignition. Wait 90 seconds before continuing to the next step.
4 Turn the ignition to the "On" position and wait 15 seconds. This position is as far as you can turn the key without starting the engine. The immobilization light located in the 911 dashboard clock will go out.
5 Turn the ignition off again then turn it back on. After 15 seconds, the immobilization light will begin to blink.
6 Enter the four digit security code using the ignition. For instance, if the first digit in the code is three you would turn the ignition from on to off, then back on. This would equal 1 digit, so you would repeat this step two more times if the first digit is "3." Afterwards, wait for the immobilization light to flash then repeat this step for the next digit. After the fourth and last digit is entered, the light will flash again to signal you are in programming mode.
7 Press a button on the key fob and hold it until the LED light blinks. This will indicate it has been programmed.

Losing the only key to a motor vehicle is inconvenient, stressful and usually costly to replace. If the car was purchased recently with financing, the seller or dealership may have a spare key. Try thorough searching first. Retrace your steps to search unlikely places such as your kitchen and bathrooms --- places that are typically the first stops after coming in to your home to put away groceries or to use the restroom. You may have left your key in these places.
Instructions
1 Contact a local dealership to determine if your specific make and model requires a programmed, laser or transponder key. A programmed key, or "chip key," is somewhat common in newer vehicles. You may be asked to provide your vehicles identification number for the dealership to find out if your specific vehicle requires any special key programming.
2 Contact local locksmiths with your specific requirements; a regular key can usually be affordable and quickly replaced. If a special key is required, ask if the locksmith is able to make a replacement key. In smaller towns it may be difficult to find a local locksmith with the technology to replace chip keys, laser keys and transponder keys. Check pricing costs with several locksmiths if possible to ensure you dont overpay.
3 Contact your local dealership again if you are unable to find a locksmith that can meet your needs. Dealerships are typically more expensive to go through for key replacement, but your vehicle key type may make it necessary to do so. If you have more than one dealership in your area, check prices as they can vary greatly. According to "The Boston Globe," replacing a key at the dealership could cost you anywhere from $80 to as high as $300 or more (as of September 2010); in fact, many dealers are reported to charge separate prices for the replacement key and the re-coding.

There could be a few reasons that you need to make a new key for your auto. You might have lost your old key or maybe you want to have a spare key on hand just in case. Making a new auto key these days is a little more complicated than is used to be. Modern auto keys contain programmed microchips that are specific to your particular auto. This means you cant simply head down to the local key shop and have a duplicate made. You will have to work with your car dealer.
Instructions
1 Locate the vehicle identification number (VIN) on your auto. This number can be found on the right side of your dashboard near the windshield, under the hood, or on the inside of the drivers side door.
2 Go to the dealership where you purchased your car or any dealership that sells the make and model of your car. For example, if you own a Ford Fusion, you would visit a Ford dealer. You may need to call in advance to make an appointment. An added benefit of an appointment is that it could help you avoid a long wait at the dealership.
3 Give the employee at the dealership your VIN and drivers license. This is required for security and identification purposes and it will establish that you are the rightful owner of the car. If you are making a duplicate key and have the original, give that key to the dealer.
4 Wait for the dealers employee to make a new key. The key will be programmed with the security codes unique to your car. The entire procedure will take about one hour.

Vehicle car keys are equipped with key codes that allow for locksmiths or automobile dealerships to create new keys for any vehicle. The key code is included in the purchase paperwork of any new or used car and its job is to inform key makers how to cut the key to make it specific to your vehicle. If you cannot locate the key code for your vehicle when you need a duplicate car key made, you can use the vehicle identification number instead.
Instructions
1 Contact a car dealership or professional locksmith in your area to have a new key made for your vehicle.
2 Provide the dealer or locksmith with the key code or the vehicle identification number (VIN) of your vehicle. The VIN tells key makers the code for your car key, allowing them to create a new key for your vehicle.
3 Prove to the dealer or locksmith that you are the owner of the vehicle by presenting your photo identification and either your insurance card, title or registration or your purchase paperwork from the car dealership.

A vehicles ignition switch is inside its steering column and is the mechanical device that sends a signal from the key to the engine to turn over. A key operates the ignition switch. In many late-model vehicles the ignition switch is programmed to work with specific car keys by using a pre-programmed key code. Acquiring new keys for your vehicle requires knowing your key code so the company cutting your keys can cut them to fit your ignition.
Instructions
1 Find the vehicle identification number on your vehicle. Typically, VINs are on the paperwork you signed and received when you purchased your vehicle, on your insurance card, title and registration and on the inside panel of the drivers door.
2 Call your vehicles service department or dealership to order a new key. Provide the dealership the VIN for your car. Your VIN contains a specialized key code that works only for your vehicle. This code will allow your dealership to correctly cut and shave your key to the correct size.
3 Pick up and pay for your new key. Use the owners manual that came with your vehicle to correctly program your new key to work with the vehicles ignition switch and computerized key code.

If you lost the key for your 1987 Dodge van, you might think about replacing the lock cylinder and use a new key. This is an option for replacement, but the cost of having a cylinder lock changed in your ignition and on your doors could become expensive. There is an easier way to replace a lost key, because Dodge keeps records of the keys used on each vehicle and keeps a master key.
Instructions
1 Write down the vehicle identification number (VIN) for your Dodge van. The number is in the drivers side dash where the dash meets the windshield.
2 Contact your local Dodge dealership, and confirm they offer key replacement services. Some dealerships do not have the equipment to cut a new key.
3 Take your VIN number and your vehicle registration to the dealership. This helps the dealership confirm you are the owner of the vehicle. They can look up the VIN number, get the key code and cut you a new key based on the master key.

Still considered a luxury item on most cars in the late 1990s, wireless entry devices, known as wireless key fobs, had yet to obtain the ubiquity they have today. As such, the technology and ease of maintenance was lacking, at the time. Reprogramming the fob for any 1997 GM, including the GMC Sierra CK1500, requires vehicle owners to have access to proprietary computer diagnostics equipment that plugs directly into a port under the vehicles dashboard to allow a technician access to the manual programming module.
Instructions
1 Locate the computer access port under the vehicles dashboard, which is a plastic array of small holes aligned into two rows that has a bundle of wire running out of the back.
2 Power on the diagnostic computer and locate the socket for 1997 GMC. With the computer turned on, insert the socket into the port under the CK1500s dash.
3 Select "body control module" from the list of options on the diagnostic computer screen.
4 Select "Keyless Entry Code" then "Program" from sub menu. The screen should display a number that is unique to the vehicle.
5 Hold replacement fob next to diagnostic computer for 10 seconds, or until the computer returns "Complete."
