How to Replace a Passenger Mirror in a 2003 Mazda 6

The Mazda 6 sedan is equipped with fixed door mirrors that may be subject to damage from minor car accidents. The procedure for replacing a door mirror is simple enough to be performed at home using basic tools, although it does require partial removal of the interior door panel. You can obtain a replacement mirror at either a Mazda dealer parts counter or you may find one at a local parts shop or junkyard.

Instructions

Removing the door and mirror assemblies

    1

Open the hood and disconnect the negative battery cable.

    2

Remove the tweeter speaker assembly from the inside of the door where the window frame meets the front of the door. Use a wide, flat bladed screwdriver or your fingers to caully pop the retaining clips around the assembly away from the door.

    3

Disconnect the tweeter assembly from the doors wiring by pushing the locking pin down and separating the connector pieces. Set the tweeter assembly aside.

    4

Pop off the cover for the door light at the base of the door panel. This is held in place by plastic prongs. Once this is removed, remove the screw located underneath.

    5

Pop open the small cap underneath the passenger side door handle and remove the screw hidden below the cap. Pull the door handle out and remove the plastic surrounding piece. Disconnect the wiring for the power door lock and set the plastic surrounding piece aside.

    6

In the door handle "pocket," pull the rubbery trim piece up ---this is secured by adhesive--- just enough to access the screw hidden beneath. Remove the screw.

    7

Caully work your way around the door panel starting at the base and pull the panel out to the retaining clips holding the panel in place. There are two clips at the back (latching) side, there are two along the base, one at the front lower corner, and three going up the front (hinge) side.

    8

Lift the door panel vertically to disengage the hooks from the top of the door. You may be able to just disengage the front hook while leaving the rear hook clipped. Allow the panel to come away from the door structure enough to allow access to the three bolts holding the door mirror in place. This will not require disconnecting the power window harness.

    9

Disconnect the power mirror electrical connector and remove the three nuts holding the mirror assembly on the door. Gently work the mirror away from the door.

Installing the mirror and door assemblies

    10

Insert the bolts on the replacement mirror assembly through the openings in the door and thread the nuts onto the bolts. Tighten the nuts, ensuring that the fit is snug and even. Reconnect the power mirror wiring harness.

    11

Hook the door panel back to the top of the door structure, caully ensuring that the panel lines up properly and that the interior door handle fits through the cutout in the door panel. Work around the door panel pushing each of the retaining clips back into place.

    12

Insert the screw into the hole in the door handle pocket ---under the rubbery trim--- and tighten it to snug. Push the trim down and hold until the adhesive sticks it into place.

    13

Clip the wiring connector for the power door lock back onto the harness and work the trim piece into place around the interior door handle. Insert the screw into the hole in the trim piece and tighten until snug. Push the cap into place covering the screw. Insert the screw into the hole by the door light and tighten until snug. Clip the door light cover into place.

    14

Reconnect the tweeter wiring harness and reinstall it by pushing the retaining clips back into place. Reconnect the cars battery and test to make sure that the electrical connections are properly installed and that all devices work as intended.

How to Replace an Outside Mirror on a 2003 Suburban

Sunday, November 24, 2013 | Labels: , , , , , , , , , | 0 comments |

The Chevrolet Suburban is a full-size sport utility vehicle manufactured by the Chevrolet division of General Motors. The models made from 2000 to 2006 are specifically known as the GMT800 Suburbans. The 2003 Suburban has an outside mirror on each side of the vehicle. The procedure for replacing the outside mirror is the same for all versions of the GMT800. Some vehicles have electrochromatic mirrors, which contain fluid that can damage the paint on the vehicle.

Instructions

    1

Press the mirror in the bottom outside corner of the mirror as you hold the upper inner corner of the mirror. Pull the upper inner corner of the the mirror gently to detach it from its mount.

    2

Disconnect the electrical connector from the mirror if your vehicle is equipped with electrochromatic mirrors and remove the mirror from the vehicle.

    3

Remove the retaining screws for the mirror motor with a socket wrench. Disconnect the electrical connector from the motor, if your vehicles is equipped with power mirrors. Detach the mirror motor from the vehicle.

    4

Install the new mirror motor into the mirror mount if your vehicle has power mirrors. Attach the electrical connector for the motor and fasten the retaining screws for the motor with a socket wrench.

How to Change the Mirror in a Hyundai Elantra

Tuesday, November 12, 2013 | Labels: , , , , , , , , | 0 comments |

The mirror in the Hyundai Elantra is mounted to the windshield via a small metal button glued the glass. Because the mirror is on the inside of the windshield, its exposed to extremes in temperature throughout the year. This can cause the glue used to adhere the reflective paint to the mirror to weaken over time. When this happens, you will need to change the mirror in your Hyundai Elantra, but the process is simple and straightforward.

Instructions

    1

Disconnect the wiring harness from the base of the Elantras rear view mirror if the mirror has a compass built into it (depends on the trim package). If your mirror does not have a compass, skip this step.

    2

Remove the Allen screw that secures the mirror to the button glued to the Hyundais windshield.

    3

Slide the mirror upward to remove it from the button.

    4

Slide the replacement mirror onto the button and secure it with the Allen screw.

    5

Reconnect the wiring harness if your replacement mirror has a compass.

How to Replace the Drivers Side Mirror on a 2002 Ford Explorer Sport Trac

The 2002 Ford Explorer Sport Trac came equipped with power mirrors. To replace the drivers side mirror (or the passengers side for that matter), removing the interior door panel is required. This is due to the fact that the trim, which covers the retaining studs and nuts that secure the mirror(s), is actually part of the door panel, and not a separate component like on a lot of other vehicles. Removing the door panel is not particularly difficult, allowing a do-it-yourself enthusiast to save both time and money on this replacement procedure.

Instructions

    1

Open the drivers side door wide, power down the window and then remove the keys from the ignition. This will prevent accidental power supply from being demanded while removing the power mirror.

    2

Remove the two screws located at the bottom of the door panel, using the Phillips screwdriver.

    3

Pull the front end of the door handle trim by hand to release the six retaining clips located on the underside of the trim.

    4

Pry the window control module away from the front of the arm rest, using the trim pry tool. Remove the wire harness connections from the underside of the window control module, then set the module aside.

    5

Remove the door panel retaining screw now revealed by the window control module removal, using the screwdriver.

    6

Disengage the door panel clips by using the trim pry tool to pry the panel away from the door frame. Start at the bottom and work up each side. Remove the door panel by lifting it slightly upward and then away from the door frame.

    7

Remove the foam insulation from the opposite side of the door frame to the drivers side mirror.

    8

Disconnect the wire harness plug, now revealed from the foam insulation removal, from the power mirror.

    9

Remove the three retaining nuts attached to the drivers side mirror studs, using the ratchet, extension and socket. Brace the old mirror when removing the last nut, so that the mirror does not fall and scratch the exterior paint on the door.

    10

Install the replacement mirror and reconnect the door panel, window control module and door handle trim piece by reversing the removal procedure.

Jeep Commander Mirror Removal

The Jeep Commander is an all terrain vehicle, widely used in off-road conditions. In such extreme conditions, damage to the side mirrors is a possibility. The side mirrors assembly on a Jeep Commander is secured inside the front door trim panels of the side doors. To remove the mirrors, you must also remove the side doors; without doing so, you cannot disconnect the mirrors assembly.

Instructions

    1

Open the side door of the Jeep Commander. Remove the front door trim panel from one of the side doors by removing the three screws that secure it to the Jeep, using a screwdriver. With a firm grip, pull the trim panel from its place in an upward and outward direction. You will hear the seven plastic retention clips release as you remove the panel.

    2

Remove the mirror flag clip, belt seal, knob and latch lock link located on the rear of the panel from the front door trim panel by pulling the connections apart. Take note of which connection you pull apart, it will be helpful during reassembly.

    3

Disconnect the wire harness connectors and the interior door handle actuator rod from the front door trim panel by again pulling the connections apart.

    4

Release the three nuts that attach the mirror to the door with a socket and ratchet. Hold on to the mirror as you do this to prevent damage either to the mirror or the paint and/or bodywork of your Jeeps side door.

    5

Disconnect the battery negative cable by pulling the connectors apart; this cable powers the motor for the power mirror assembly.

    6

Pull mirror apart from door carefully.

    7

Repeat on the other side door for the second mirror.

How Do I Replace the Side Mirror on My 1994 GMC Sonoma?

Like many GM vehicles, the 1994 GMC Sonoma requires the removal of the interior door panel to replace the side view mirror. This task might intimidate many people but its not overly complicated. As a matter of fact, the first time a would-be home mechanic tries this and realizes how uncomplicated it is, he may desire to step up to bigger challenges. Replacing the side view mirrors on the Sonoma is less complicated than learning how to use them to back the truck up.

Instructions

    1

Roll the window down all the way on the door with the mirror that needs replacing. If the Sonoma has power windows, turn the ignition to the "Off" position and remove the key from the ignition once the window is down.

    2

Align the window crank removal tool (manual windows only) behind the length of the window crank. Pry the tool in between the crank and the door panel to unseat the retaining clip. The clip snaps over the internal section of the crank and will pop off with a slight spring force. Be careful not to let it fly off and get lost. Pull the window crank off its shaft once the spring is off.

    3

Remove the two screws in the door pull cup with the Phillips screwdriver.

    4

Pry the outside edge of the door panel (between the panel and the door frame) away from the frame with the trim panel pry tool. Work the pry tool to the bottom of the door panel and then to the other side to unseat all the plastic internal fasteners.

    5

Push the door panel upward slightly to unseat the lip of the panel secured to the ridge of the door/window frame.

    6

Disconnect the wire harness located on the inside of the door panel and then remove the door panel.

    7

Disconnect the wire harness for the side view mirror (power mirrors only).

    8

Remove the three retaining nuts attached the the side mirror studs with a ratchet and socket. Brace the mirror with one hand when removing the last nut, so the mirror does not fall and scratch the paint on the door.

    9

Feed the wire harness (power mirrors only) through the access hole in the door frame to remove the mirror and harness from the Sonoma. For manual mirrors, simply remove the mirror.

    10

Install the replacement mirror (manual or power) by reversing the removal procedure and then reinstall the door panel by reversing the removal procedure.

How to Replace a Passenger Side Mirror on a 2002 Tundra Pickup

Thursday, September 5, 2013 | Labels: , , , , , , , , , , | 0 comments |

The 2002 Toyota Tundra has very large side view mirrors to minimize blind spots while hauling large loads in the truck bed or towing trailers. The mirrors make it easier to drive, but also make the mirror glass more vulnerable to passing vehicles or objects that could crack the thick plastic. Fortunately, side view mirrors attach to the mirror adjustment motor in the same manner as a ball and socket joint. The back of the mirror has a round socket molded into to it and the top of the mirror motor has a ball molded onto it. The two pieces press together to allow the mirror to pivot in the mirror housing during adjustments.

Instructions

    1

Turn one side of the mirror into the housing like you would when adjusting it. If changing the drivers side mirror, push in on the right side of the mirror. If adjusting the passenger side mirror on the Tundra, push in on the left side of the mirror. When you push one side of the mirror into the housing, it causes the other side of the mirror to extend out of the housing. This allows access to the back of the mirror. Make the adjustment with the mirror motor via the electronic adjuster on the inner door panel or do it by pushing on the glass with your hand.

    2

Squeeze your fingers behind the Tundras side view mirror and pull outward on it to separate the ball and socket connector. It takes a small amount of pressure to break the two apart. However, you will not damage the mirror motor.

    3

Place the new mirror into the housing. The mirror is a tight fit inside the housing. Because of the tight fit, the ball and socket connector automatically lines up.

    4

Push on the face of the Tundras mirror with the ball of your fist until the ball and socket pop together. You hear a small pop as the two press together. This lets you know the mirror is securely attached to the motor.
