My 1997 4Runner Wont Start

The Toyota 4Runner is an SUV used for off-roading or hauling materials. If your 1997 Toyota 4Runner will not start, there are a couple of easy things that you can do realtively quickly. The battery and fluid levels are the first things to check to get the Toyota 4Runner started again.

Instructions

    1

Open the hood to your 4Runner and look over the battery for any corrosion.

    2

Clean the corroded battery terminals with a rag and then tighten them to the battery.

    3

Check the positive and negative leads on the terminals to make sure the battery is installed properly.

    4

Check the lights in your 4Runner to make sure that you didnt leave any on. If you left your lights on, the battery may just need to charge.

    5

Use a separate car and jump the battery with jumper cables. Connect the positive lead of the jumper cable to the positive lead on your car battery. Connect the negative lead of the jumper cable to the negative lead on your car battery. Repeat the process on another car. Start the car and then start your car.

    6

Check the fluid levels in your car. Low fluid can cause the engine to lock up and will inhibit the car from starting.

    7

Check the fuel level to make sure you have enough gas.

How Do I Jump Start a BMW 1100 LT?

The BMW K 1100 LT motorcycle was manufactured in the early 90s by the German automobile company BMW. Like a car, this motorcycle required a battery to provide electricity to start the engine. Although not recommended by the manufacturer, the battery of the BMW K 1100 LT can be jumped using a car should the battery die. When jumping the battery, extreme care should be exercised as incorrectly jumping the battery could damage the motorcycles electrical system.

Instructions

    1

Position the motorcycle near the front end of the car. Ensure that the vehicle and the motorcycle are not touching in any way. Turn off both the vehicle and the motorcycle, and remove the keys from the ignition.

    2

Open the hood of the vehicle and remove the seat of the BMW K 1100 LT to expose the batteries.

    3

Connect the jumper cable with the red handle to the positive terminal on the vehicles battery. Connect the other red jumper cable to the positive terminal on the motorcycles battery. Take great care to ensure that the positive terminal does not touch any other metal on the motorcycle.

    4

Connect the other jumper cable to the negative terminal on the vehicles battery. Hook the other end of the jumper cable to a metal area of the motorcycle, such as the rear axle nut. Do not mistake chrome for metal.

    5

Turn on the motorcycle, but do not turn on the vehicle as doing so could destroy the motorcycles electrical system. Remove the jumper cables in the reverse order that they were installed.

My 1990 Astro Van Ran Out of Gas and Wont Start

If your van runs out of gas, this can create more problems than just not being able to move at the moment. Once you ill the tank, you still may have problems restarting the engine. Any fuel system that runs too low on gas can experience problems with the fuel pump and fuel pressure. You might be able to restart the car if you can re-pressurize the system, but its possible that you will need a new pump altogether.

Instructions

Refilling and Re-pressurizing

    1

Fill the fuel tank with unleaded gasoline from an approved gas can. Use the largest amount of fuel you can transport to the van.

    2

Turn the ignition key to the start position for about two seconds, then tun it back to the off position for five more seconds. Repeat this five to 10 times to re-pressurize the fuel system.

    3

Try starting the car again. If it wont start at this point, you will likely need to replace a burned-out fuel pump.

    4

Siphon out the fuel with a never-used vacuum pump and store it in the gas can, if you need to change the pump, then disconnect the negative battery cable.

Fuel Pump

    5

Raise the van on its rear end and support it with jack stands, blocking the front wheels with heavy blocks. Raise the floor jack or a transmission jack under the tank.

    6

Disconnect the electrical connectors on the fuel tank and then unclip the lower shield on the tanks right side to reveal the fuel line fittings. Loosen and disconnect the fittings with a screwdriver, then disconnect the filler neck from the tank.

    7

Unbolt and remove the straps for the tank and lower it down with the jack, disconnecting the fuel pump lead.

    8

Tap and loosen the locking ring with a brass punch and hammer until the tangs and cut outs line up. Pull the pump assembly out of the tank.

    9

Insert the new pump assembly into the tank, making sure it is lined up in the same position as the old one was, then turn/tap the lock ring into place.

    10

Reconnect all the lines and electrical connectors to the fuel pump flange, raise the tank into position and bolt the tank into place.

    11

Refill the tank and perform the pressurization steps as described in Section 1.

My Jeep is Stalled and Wont Start

The Jeep is an all-purpose off-road vehicle. There are several reasons why a Jeep could stall and not start back up. You may have a bad battery or a bad starter. You can troubleshoot to find out what is wrong with your Jeep and try to get it up and running before resorting to a mechanic.

Instructions

Battery

    1

Turn the ignition and turn on your headlights.

    2

Get out of the Jeep and look to see if your headlights come on.

    3

Open your hood if the lights do not come on.

    4

Look over your battery for any corrosion. Use a screwdriver to scrape the corrosion off the battery. Use caution when doing this. Battery acid can harm your skin and clothes.

    5

Tighten the connections from your battery to the terminals. Turn your Jeep back on.

Jump Start

    6

Get another vehicle and pop the hoods on your Jeep and the other vehicle.

    7

Connect the red end of your jumper wires to the red connection on your Jeep. Connect the other red end to the red connection on the other car.

    8

Connect the two back ends to the black connections on the cars.

    9

    Turn the other car on.

    10

Start your Jeep and let it run for at least 5 minutes to give the battery a good charge.

Starter

    11

Pop the hood on your Jeep and follow the red cable coming from your battery to the starter. This is shaped like a soda can but larger.

    12

Use a screwdriver to connect the two poles on the starter. Lay the screwdriver across the two poles to form a circuit.

    13

Listen for the starter to let off a sound. If you hear the starter run then the starter is OK. If it is not running, you need to replace the starter.

    14

Make sure the connection from the starter to the battery is complete. Tighten the connection if needed.

    15

Test the alternator at an auto parts store if the starter is working but the Jeep still will not turn on.

How to Troubleshoot a 1999 F250 Ford Diesel Truck That is Hard to Start

The 1999 Ford F-250 is a diesel truck that many people use to haul heavy items with good fuel economy. If your F-250 is having a hard time starting, there are a few things that you can do before you get it towed to a repair shop. You dont have to be a car mechanic to get your diesel working again. You can do it yourself with little hassle and minimal knowledge of truck repair.

Instructions

    1

Insert your key into the F-250s ignition and then try to start the truck. Check the electrical panel on the dashboard. Look at the battery meter and the gas gauge on the dashboard. If your truck does not have enough gas to start, fill the tank with diesel.

    2

Use the applicable fuel for the truck. If you are using winter diesel in the summer, you will need to change the fuel. Summer diesel should not be used in the winter. Use a siphon to pump the gas out of the trucks gas tank.

    3

Insert one end of the hose into the gas tank. Insert the other end into an empty container. Pump the siphon hose to siphon the gas out of the tank and into the container. Fill the gas tank with the applicable diesel.

    4

Check the battery connections to the battery if your gauge indicated that there was a low charge. Open the hood and locate the battery next to the engine. Make sure that the battery connections are properly connected to the terminals. The red cable should be on the positive (+) terminal and the black cable should be on the negative terminal (-). Use a pair of channel locks to secure the connections.

    5

Place the terminal leads of the voltmeter to your batterys connections. The diesel truck uses a 12-volt battery. You should get an 11 to 12 volt reading on the voltmeters display. If you dont get an 11 to 12 volt reading from the voltmeter, replace the battery.

    6

Jack the front end of the truck up with a jack and then locate the small black box on the bottom of the engine. This is the starter. Have a friend turn the ignition and listen to the starter. If you hear buzzing or clicking coming from the starter, you need to have it replaced by a certified technician.

How to Jump Start an E30

You should avoid jump starting a BMW E30 if at all possible. The E30 is part of the BMW 3 series, manufactured from 1982 until 1994. Jump starting an E30 can cause damage to electrical components, such as terminals, fuses, cable ties, batteries, bulbs and lead lamps. Disconnecting the battery and charging it is suggested. Unfortunately, events can strand you by the side of the road and jump starting your E30 could be your last resort.

Instructions

    1

Park the cars close enough together so that the jumper cables will reach but far enough that the vehicles are not touching each other.

    2

Consult your BMW E30 owners handbook to determine the location of the battery. The location will vary depending on the vehicle model. The battery can be found in the engine compartment, under the rear seat or in the rear luggage compartment.

    3

Turn both ignitions to the off position. Confirm that all electrical equipment is in the off position in the BMW E30.

    4

Clamp one end of the positive jumper cable to the BMW E30 batterys positive terminal. Jumper cables have a set of clamps colored red and/or marked with a plus symbol for positive (+) and colored black and/or marked with a minus symbol for negative (-).

    5

Clamp the other positive end of the positive jumper cable to the working batterys positive terminal.

    6

Clamp one end of the negative jumper cable to the negative terminal of the working battery.

    7

Clamp the other end of the negative jumper cable to the engine block of the BMW E30. This grounds the connection to protect against a power surge.

    8

Start the engine of the car with the working battery.

    9

Start the BMW E30. Check your connections and adjust them as needed if the car does not start.

    10

Remove the cables in the opposite order they were attached.

    11

Run the engine of the BMW E30 for at least 20 minutes to allow the battery to recharge.

My 1992 7.3 Ford Diesel Turns Over But Wont Start

The 7.3-liter Ford diesel is an engine with high ratings for fuel economy. If you are having problems with your 7.3-liter Ford diesel, you can do several things before you take it to a service center. Diesel engines are not very hard to work on. Most of the troubleshooting can be done without invasive repairs to the engine and minimal knowledge of how the engine works. Common issues reside in incorrect fuel, a bad starter or leaks from the engine.

Instructions

    1

Insert and partly turn the key, to engage the Ford electrical panel. Look over the fuel gauge and make a note if there is not enough diesel in the tank to start the engine. Low fuel prevents an engine from starting.

    2

Replace the fuel in the tank with the proper diesel. Changing diesel according to the season is imperative. Summer diesel will be cloudy in the winter -- this is the presence of condensation in the tank.

    3

Use a siphon hose to remove the diesel from the tank. Put one end of the siphon pump into the fuel tank and then put the other end of the siphon pump into an empty gas container. Pump the siphon until the tank is empty. Fill the tank with the proper kind of diesel fuel.

    4

Raise your 7.3-liter Ford with a jack, so you can get under the vehicle. Look for the small box next to the engine block on the right side of the vehicle. This is the starter. Get a helper to turn the ignition. Listen to the starter while the ignition is cranking. If you hear a clicking or a buzzing noise, have the starter replaced by a certified technician.

    5

Look around the Ford for any leaks. Leaks can inhibit the car from starting properly. If you do find leaks, have the vehicle towed, or drive it to a service shop to have the leaked repaired.

The Mazda MPV is a four-door sedan designed for fuel efficiency. If your Mazda MPV isnt starting properly, you could have a dead battery or no fuel in the car. A broken fuel gauge can give you the wrong information and allow you to run the car down. A dead battery will not be able to spark the motor and keep the car from starting. You can troubleshoot your Mazda MPV by checking the fuel and the battery.

Instructions

    1

Open the hood to the Mazda MPV. Locate the battery; its to the right of the engine.

    2

Use a socket wrench to remove the battery terminals. Inspect the battery terminals for any corrosion.

    3

Use a wire brush and a can of soda to clean the corrosion off of the terminals. Replace the terminals on the battery and try to start the car.

    4

Smell the battery for a rotten egg smell. This is sulfur and means that the battery is dead. Replace the battery if you detect this odor.

    5

Use a different car and a pair of jumper cables to jump-start your MPV. Allow the car to sit for about five minutes in order to charge the MPVs battery.

    6

Turn the MPV off and then try to start the car. If the car will not start, you need to change the battery.

    7

Add a gallon of fuel to the car and then try to start it. Replace the fuel gauge if the car starts up.

Will an Oil Pressure Switch Cause a Car to Not Start

Friday, October 18, 2013 | Labels: , , , , , , , , , , | 0 comments |
Will an Oil Pressure Switch Cause a Car to Not Start?

A vehicles oil pressure switch keeps track of the oil pressure that the oil pump creates. This is important because low oil pressure can severely damage a vehicles engine due to the fact that the engine needs adequate lubrication at all times.

Functions

On older model vehicles, an oil pressure switch will send a signal to the oil pressure light. This warning light comes on when the car is cranked but goes off as the pressure builds. The oil pressure switch on newer model vehicles will signal its computer, which can cause a car not to start if it has low oil pressure.

Pressure

In addition to an oil pressure warning light, some automobiles also have a gauge which the oil pressure switch can inform of the vehicles current oil pressure levels. The pressure levels typically range from about 7 psi to 12 psi when the automobile is idling and 40 psi to 60 psi when the automobile is being driven.

Tips

When it has been determined that an oil pressure switch needs a replacement, there are a few things that should be done in advance. Have a reputable mechanic check that oil levels are correct. The vehicles oil pressure should also be checked to make sure it matches specifications required by the vehicles manufacturer.
