How to Replace an IGN Lock

Ignition lock cylinders come in different styles. The two most common are the complete assembly and the simple mechanism. The complete assembly consists of the tumbler, the ignition switch and the wiring. Some models may have additional components. The simple mechanism usually is just the tumbler assembly. Either one should come with a set of keys. Remember to keep your old key to open the doors. Very few models can be adjusted to fit your current key.

Instructions

    1

Disconnect the battery. Allow at least 30 minutes to pass (check your vehicles particular specifications); this will allow the airbag capacitor to drain. If this step is skipped, the air bag could deploy.

    2

Remove drivers side lower kick panel. Visually inspect all wiring coming from the steering column. Do not disturb or disconnect any wires wrapped in yellow or yellow connectors ---these are for the airbag. If any nicks, breaks or burns are found repair them before continuing.

    3

Remove the upper and lower panels of the steering column. Locate the ignition lock cylinder, it should be located on the right-hand side of the column. Some models require you to insert the key for removal. If it is a simple tumbler it should be held in place by a retainer clip, tabs or a clamp. Using a pick, remove the clip or depress the tabs. The tumbler should slide out of its barrel.

    4

Find the bolts that attach the assembly to the column and remove them, if it is a complete assembly. Unplug the electrical connector and replace.

    5

Route all wires so they wont be seen from the outside or be pinched by the panels. Finish all interior work before reconnecting the battery. If any problems arise use the multimeter to search for voltage drops.
