A PCM is a computer system in the 1999 Pontiac Sunfire and many other vehicles manufactured after 1996. PCM stands for Powertrain Control Module.

Function

The Sunfires PCM interacts with a number a sensors throughout the vehicle. Many of these are located in the engine and the fuel system. When the PCM detects a fault or malfunction, a specific code is assigned. These codes correspond with standardized definitions and can be referenced while performing engine diagnostics.

On-Board Diagnostics (OBD-II)

The 1999 Pontiac Sunfire is subject to the Environmental Protection Agencys rules regarding vehicle diagnostics. The Sunfires PCM uses the OBD-II system that is universal to all cars manufactured after 1996. The diagnostic codes for a 1999 Sunfire are mostly the same as they are for Fords, Dodges and Chevrolets.

Potential

You can retrieve diagnostic codes from your 1999 Sunfire, but youll need an OBD-II scanner. The scanner connects to the PCM through the Sunfires Data Link Connector (DLC). The DLC outlet is uncovered and lies directly beneath the steering wheel in a 1999 Sunfire. OBD-II diagnostic hand-held scanners dont have a standard way of operating, so youll have to consult your scanners manual to correctly use it.
