How to Replace a Fuel Pump in a 2000 Dodge Intrepid

Your 2000 Dodge Intrepid fuel pump is the component that pressurizes the gasoline in the car, which allows the fuel injectors to supply the engine with fuel. Replacing the fuel pump is a relatively simple procedure that can be done at home. However, in order to access the fuel pump, you must remove the fuel tank, which is a separate procedure you should know how to perform.

Instructions

Relieving the Fuel System Pressure

    1

Take out the fuel filler cap.

    2

Disconnect the fuel pump relay from the power distribution center, located in the engine compartment. The relays should be identified under the cover of the power distribution center.

    3

Start your Intrepid engine, and leave it running, until it dies. Crank the engine several times. Remove the key from the ignition.

    4

Attach the fuel pump relay back into the power distribution center.

    5

Remove the negative battery cable from the remote ground terminal, located on the right fender in the engine compartment, using a wrench to remove the retaining bolt. Pull out the cable.

Removing the Fuel Pump

    6

Detach the fuel tank from your Intrepid. This is a separate procedure. The fuel pump module is found on the fuel tank.

    7

Remove the fuel lines and electrical connectors from the fuel pump module. This can be done, depending on what fitting was installed in the fuel pump, which includes a singe-tab type, a two-tab type or a plastic ring type. Tabbed fittings need to be squeezed, so they loosen enough to allow for the lines to pull apart. The tab on a single-tab fitting needs to be discarded and replaced. Loosen a plastic ring type fitting, by pushing in the locking ring.

    8

Loosen the module locknut, by turning it, counterclockwise, using large channel locks pliers.

    9

Lift out the fuel pump module from the tank at an angle. Do not to break off the fuel-level sending float unit when removing the module. Clean any spilled fuel with rags.

    10

Place the fuel pump module in a container or drain pan.

    11

Replace the seal to where the fuel pump module is placed on the fuel tank. Wipe down the tank-sealing surface with rags.

    12

Insert the new fuel pump module. Line up the tabs, under the module, with the notches on the fuel tank.

    13

Screw the fuel pump module locknut tight, to about 40 ft-lbs., either by hand or with your channel locks pliers.

    14

Attach the electrical connections and the fuel lines to the new fuel pump module.

    15

Install the fuel tank back onto your Intrepid.

    16

Attach the negative battery cable to the stud, and tighten the bolt with your wrench. Install the fuel filler cap.

How to Replace a Mass Air Flow Sensor in a 3 8 2000 Buick

Tuesday, May 13, 2014 | Labels: , , , , , , , , , , , , | 0 comments |

Replacing the mass air flow sensor on your 2000 Buick 3.8-liter engine is relatively straightforward. The MAF sensor sits on top of the throttle body just above the air intake. The MAF sensor is a flat, plastic piece held in place with several screws and has an electrical connector attached to its left side. Replacement OE MAF sensors are available through the dealer and aftermarket replacements are available from most auto-parts stores.

Instructions

    1

Open the hood of your Buick and locate the throttle body on the front of the engine. The air intake hose attaches to the front of the throttle body, making it easy to identify.

    2

Disconnect the electrical connector from the end of the sensor by lifting the locking tab on the connector, then pulling it straight off the sensor. Locate the two screws on the top of the sensor--they are at opposite corners--and remove them with a Torx screwdriver.

    3

Lift the MAF sensor straight up and away from the throttle body. Discard it and position a new MAF sensor on the throttle body, aligning the screw holes in the sensor with the threaded holes on the throttle body.

    4

Install the two Torx-head retaining screws through the MAF sensor and into the throttle body. Tighten them with a Torx screwdriver, then push the electrical connector onto the end of the new sensor, making sure the locking tab snaps in place.

Where Is the Horn on a 2000 Ford F 250

Saturday, May 3, 2014 | Labels: , , , , , , , , , | 0 comments |

For 2000 Ford F-250 trucks, the horns are mounted behind the radiator grille. Removing the horns requires detaching one retaining bolt. An electrical connector also links the horns themselves to the horn pad inside the vehicle.

Replacement

Generally, car horns are not off-the-shelf items. To obtain a replacement, a F-250 owner would need to order through a dealership or an online retailer. The mechanical replacement process should only take a few minutes. Once the F-250s hood is opened, the horn can be located behind the grille. After the wiring is disconnected, only one bolt needs removal.

The Steering Wheel

The F-250s horn can be sounded by pressing a component on the steering wheel. The horn also has components within the steering wheel, and getting to them requires partially dismantling the steering wheel itself. The horns electrical connections and wiring are near the airbag module. For reasons of safety, the F-250s airbag system should be disarmed before attempting to dismantle the steering wheel.

Disarming the Air Bags

Disarming the F-250s air bag system requires opening the trucks hood. Remove the negative cable from the batterys negative terminal. Then, remove the positive cable from the positive terminal. Wait five minutes or more. The F-250 will have residual power within the vehicle. It needs to drain out or the air bags could still deploy.

2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo Fuel Pump Problems

Wednesday, February 26, 2014 | Labels: , , , , , , , | 0 comments |
2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo Fuel Pump Problems

Jeep issued a recall on the 2000 Grand Cherokee Laredo in 2005 for fuel pump problems, according to Internet Auto Guide. Not a widespread recall, it only affected a few Laredos, but other fuel pump problems have arisen for some 2000 Jeep owners. The fuel pump pushes gas from the tank through the fuel line and into the engines injectors. Problems with the fuel pump cause little or no fuel to reach the engine, creating multiple problems.

Plastic Grommet Failure

A plastic grommet on the 2000 Laredo fuel pump module was not compatible with gasoline, which caused the grommet connectors to degrade and allow gasoline to leak out. Since the fuel pump sits near the exhaust system, gasoline leaking out of the fuel pump can land on the exhaust and create a fire hazard. The fuel pump came from a specific manufacturer and only affected 7,291 Chrysler vehicles---including the 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo.

Fuel Pump Failure

According to the website Car Complaints, some 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo owners have experienced fuel pump failure. Though no known specific cause for this problem exists as of 2010, gasoline leaking out of the fuel pump can cause it to work harder to push gasoline through the fuel line and possibly burn out. The only correction for this fuel pump problem involves replacing the fuel pump.

CMP Sensor Problems

The 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo has had problems with the camshaft position (CMP) sensor. The Laredo uses the CMP sensor to synchronize the fuel through the fuel pump. When this sensor goes out or operates intermittently, the fuel pump will fail to push gasoline through the fuel line. The vehicle will stall during acceleration, run roughly, jerk or hesitate during operation or achieve low fuel mileage. The CMP sensor requires replacement to correct this fuel pump problem.

How to Put a Fan Belt on a 2000 Mitsubishi Galant

Monday, February 3, 2014 | Labels: , , , , , , , , , | 0 comments |

Replacing the belt on your 2000 Galant should be part of the regular maintenance plan for your vehicle. The serpentine belt on your Mitsubishi turns all the accessories on the front of the engine, and a failure could leave you stranded on the side of the road. The alternator would stop turning, leaving the ignition to draw power from the battery until it died. The water pump would not spin, allowing the engine to overheat, and the power steering would stop working. Change the belt at the first sign of damage or excess wear.

Instructions

    1

Locate the battery in your Galant. Remove the retaining bolt from the negative cable end with a wrench and lift the cable off the battery. Tuck it aside so that it cannot fall back against the battery terminals.

    2

Move to the front of the engine and locate the bolt that runs through the center of the serpentine belt tensioner pulley. Loosen the bolt with a socket and ratchet but do not remove it completely. Locate the adjuster bolt at the base of the tensioner.

    3

Loosen the adjuster bolt with a socket and ratchet by turning it counterclockwise until the belt is loose enough to remove from the pulley. Slide the old belt off the pulleys and discard it.

    4

Slide the new serpentine belt over the pulleys, making sure you route the belt properly. There is a belt-path diagram on the radiator support that will help if you need it. Turn the adjusting bolt on the tensioner clockwise until the belt is tight. Tighten the locking bolt in the center of the tensioner pulley with a socket and ratchet.

    5

Reattach the negative battery cable on the negative terminal and tighten the retaining bolt with a wrench. Close the hood and recheck the tension on the belt after driving the car for a few days.

How to Change the Muffler on a 2000 Accord

The 2000 Honda Accord has a chambered muffler. A chambered muffler forces the exhaust through a series of chambers and passageways to reduce the sound and vibrations caused by the exhaust system. When the sound of the exhaust system begins to drown out the standard noises of the car, such as the engine or the radio, it is time to replace the muffler. Another way to tell is if exhaust is exiting the system anywhere other than the tail pipe.

Instructions

    1

Drive the car backward up on to the car ramps. This allows easy access to the muffler.

    2

    Disconnect the negative battery terminal.

    3

Apply the penetration oil to all of the muffler clamp nuts and fittings. These are most likely very rusty from driving through wet conditions and the heat.

    4

Remove the muffler clamp. If the nuts are too difficult to remove or if the muffler has been welded, use the hacksaw and cut the muffler at the clamp.

    5

Remove the nuts in the muffler hanger. Use the impact wrench to remove these nuts. They have been tightened and stressed due to heat.

    6

Pry the muffler loose from its rubber straps. Inspect the rubber straps for damage.

    7

Install the new muffler. Insert it into the strap and attach it to the left over muffler with the muffler clamp. Reattach the muffler hanger. Reattach the negative battery cable.

What Type of Oil Does a 2000 John Deere 650 Use?

Taking proper care of your tractors engine is essential to maintaining a properly working engine that will last and have few complications. The 200 John Deere T280 has a Yanmar T280 engine and requires that you use certain types of oil. Oil for your tractor is one thing you dont want to skimp on, as the better quality brands are better for your engine, lubricate better than the cheaper ones and last longer.

John Deer 650 Engine

The John Deere 650 is distributed by John Deere and manufactured by Yanmar in Japan with a Yanmar T280 engine. The Yanmar T280 engine is a 2-cylinder diesel engine with liquid cooling. This particular model has 2,600 rpm with 12 starter volts. Its available in 4x2 or 4x4, manual or power steering.

Diesel Engine Care

Diesel engines need different care than gasoline engines. Diesel engines generally create greater internal pressure and heat, therefore oil is used more in diesel engines for cooling the engine than with gasoline. They are also more susceptible to engine problems caused by poor lubrication and dirt. Improper oil use and care can be detrimental to your tractor, causing serious engine damage, overheating and thermal distortion.

Oil Types

There are several oil types, and within these types are various classifications. The two most common types are designated for diesel (compression engines) and gasoline engines (spark engines). Each type has a API (American Petroleum Institute) rating. The ratings will signify the type of oil and class. The first letter represents the type "C" for diesel compression engines and "S" for gasoline spark engines. The second letter represents the class or grade.

What Oil for Your Tractor

To properly maintain and care for your Yanmar diesel engine, it is recommended that you use an oil with a classification of CE, CF, CG or higher.

How to Install an EGR Valve on a 2000 Ford Explorer

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve on the 2000 Ford Explorer is an important part of the engine emissions system. The EGR valve allows a precisely metered amount of exhaust gas to be circulated back to the combustion chamber. This introduction of exhaust gas into the cylinder allows the engine to achieve combustion at a lower temperature, leading to the creation of fewer smog-related emissions. If the EGR valve is not functioning properly, it can lead to misfires, rough idle, stalling, and failed emissions tests. Fortunately, the EGR valve is easily replaced using basic hand tools.

Instructions

    1

Park the Explorer on flat, level ground with the parking brake fully engaged. Raise the hood by pulling the release handle located under the steering column and then pulling up on the lever located under the center of the hood while lifting the hood. Disconnect the negative battery cable with a pair of pliers or open-ended wrench. The EGR valve is located above, and slightly in front of, the exhaust manifold on the drivers side of the engine. The EGR valve is a flat metal disc with a small rubber hose attached to the top and a larger metal pipe running from the bottom of the valve to the exhaust manifold.

    2

Remove the small rubber hose from the top of the EGR by gently pulling straight up on the rubber fitting. Unscrew the metal pipe from the bottom of the EGR using an open-ended or adjustable wrench. Remove the two bolts holding the EGR valve to the engine. Remove the valve from the engine.

    3

Clean any remaining gasket material from the EGR valve mating surface using a plastic putty knife.

    4

Install a new EGR gasket on the mating surface using gasket sealer to hold it in place. Attach the new EGR valve to the engine using new bolts and tighten the bolts to 15 foot-pounds. Reconnect and securely tighten the metal pipe to the bottom of the valve and slide the rubber fitting back onto the top of the valve.

    5

Reconnect the negative battery terminal and close the hood.

How to Replace a Tail Light on a 2000 Ford Expedition XLT

Monday, November 4, 2013 | Labels: , , , , , , , , , , | 0 comments |

In 1997, Ford released an all-new full-sized SUV known as the Expedition. Ford based the initial body design, which lasted through 2002, on the F-series pickup truck. Even the Expeditions headlights and taillights were nearly identical to those on the F-series. Replacing the taillight on the Expedition requires the removal of the taillight assembly. This requires just two hand tools and a short amount of time.

Instructions

    1

Open the Expeditions rear hatch and remove the two screws on the top of the taillight lens, using a Phillips screwdriver. Pry the taillight assembly from the rear of the SUV, using a flat-head screwdriver with the blade wrapped in a cloth. The cloth helps prevent damage to the taillight assembly and the Expeditions body.

    2

Twist the taillight bulb socket -- the upper socket on the rear of the taillight assembly -- counterclockwise to unlock it. Pull the socket and bulb from the taillight assembly.

    3

Pull the failed taillight bulb from the socket, using a slight wiggling motion. Using a clean, lint-free cloth, press a new 3157 bulb into the socket. Touching the bulb with your bare hands may cause premature bulb failure.

    4

Insert the socket and bulb into the rear of the taillight assembly and twist the socket clockwise to lock it in place.

    5

Set the taillight assembly back on the rear of the Expedition and tighten the screws with a Phillips screwdriver. Close the rear hatch.

Replacing the alternator on your 2000 Chrysler Sebring is a good project to undertake at home, and it will save you from steep labor charges from the dealership or the repair shop. If the battery is not charging and the car does not stay running without the battery cables attached to the battery, the alternator is more than likely not putting out the voltage required for the proper operation of the ignition system. Removing the alternator from your car allows for bench testing, to verify that the unit is truly faulty.

Instructions

    1

Open the hood of the car and locate the negative battery cable (it bolts to the inner fender well, on the drivers side of the engine compartment). Remove the bolt with a socket and ratchet, then remove the cable and set it aside, isolating it from any metal surface so that it cannot ground and complete the electrical circuit.

    2

Locate the field circuit connector on the rear of the alternator. Depress the locking clip and pull the wire and connector from the alternator. Lay the wire and connector aside.

    3

Remove the nut from the "B" terminal on the rear of the alternator with a wrench, then remove the cable from the terminal. Lay the cable aside.

    4

Locate the mounting bolt at the top of the alternator and loosen it with a socket and ratchet. Loosen the pivot bolt, then remove the drive belt from the alternator pulley. Set the spacers from the pivot bolt aside for later reuse.

    5

Remove the top mounting bolt from the alternator, then raise the alternator out of the engine compartment. Position the new alternator in the engine compartment and insert the upper mounting bolt to hold it in place. Slide the drive belt over the pulley, then insert the pivot bolt, being sure to put the spacers back in the proper order.

    6

Pull the bottom of the alternator toward the drivers side of the car until the belt is tight, then tighten the pivot bolt with a socket and ratchet. Tighten the upper mounting bolt with a socket and ratchet once the pivot bolt is secure.

2000 Jetta Head Bolt Torque Specs

The Jetta is a small family sedan that was first introduced by Volkswagen Group in 1979. Over the years, five generations of Jetta have been released and the car has become the bestselling VW car in North America. For the 2000 model year, Volkswagon offered three different engines for the Jetta, each with its own head bolt torque specifications.

1.8L Turbo

Volkswagons 1.8-liter Turbo engine has 10 head bolts arranged in pairs across the engine. The bolts should first be pre-tightened to a specification of 40 Newton Meters (Nm), starting with the middle two bolts and proceeding in sequence out towards either the left or right end of the engine. The bolts should then be tightened again in the same sequential order by making a one-quarter turn of the wrench, and then tightened once again with another one-quarter turn.

2.8L V6

There are 20 head bolts arranged in three lines across Volkswagons 2.8-liter V6 engine. The bolts should first be pre-tightened in sequence to a specification of 50 Newton Meters (N-m), starting with the first bolt that is situated in the center of the engine block between cylinders 3 and 4. Proceed tightening the bolts in sequence out towards either the left or right end of the engine. The bolts should then be tightened again in the same sequential order by making a one-quarter turn of the wrench, and then tightened once again with another one-quarter turn.

2.0L L4

Volkswagons 2.0-liter L4 engine has 10 bolts that are arranged in pairs across the engine. The bolts should first be pre-tightened in sequence to a specification of 40 Newton Meters (N-m), starting with the middle two bolts and proceeding in sequence out towards either left or right end of the engine. The bolts should then be tightened again in the same sequential order by making a one-quarter turn using a box wrench, and then tightened again with another one-quarter turn.

Tools and Equipment

AST 3452 A is the model of the wrench required for tightening the head bolts on VW engines. This wrench can be used on most 1998 and later VW and Audi engines.

How to Change the Fuel Pump on a 2000 Chevy 1500

Wednesday, September 11, 2013 | Labels: , , , , , , , , , , | 0 comments |

The Chevrolet C/K 1500 is a line of full-size pickup trucks made from 1960 to 2000. A "C" designator indicates a 2-door vehicle and a "K" designator indicates a 4-door vehicle. The "1500" designator indicates that its a 1/2-ton truck. The 2000 Chevy 1500 has a fuel pump module inside the fuel tank that contains a fuel pump and other fuel system components. Changing the fuel pump on this vehicle therefore requires you to remove the fuel tank and separate the fuel pump from the rest of the fuel pump module.

Instructions

    1

Disconnect the cable from batterys negative terminal with a socket wrench. Loosen the filler cap on the fuel tank and connect a fuel pressure gauge to the fuel pressure valve on the fuel rail. Place the bleed hose for the fuel pressure gauge into a gasoline-approved container. Open the valve on the fuel pressure gauge to drain fuel into the container. Detach the fuel pressure gauge from the fuel pressure valve.

    2

Drain the fuel from the fuel tank and disconnect the fuel lines from the fuel tank. Support the fuel tank with a jack stand and disconnect the bolt for the fuel tank retaining strap with a socket wrench. Lower the fuel tank halfway to the ground. Remove the harness clip for the cross member on the underside of the vehicle and disconnect the electrical connectors for the fuel tank. Lower the fuel tank completely and remove it from the vehicle.

    3

Turn the retaining ring on the fuel sender assembly counterclockwise with a fuel tank sending unit wrench. Detach the retaining ring and remove the fuel sender assembly and seal from the fuel tank. Discard the seal. Pull the fuel strainer from the fuel sender assembly and discard the fuel strainer. Clean the surface of the fuel tank around the mounting area for the fuel sender assembly.

    4

Disconnect the electrical connector for the fuel pump. Detach the retaining clip for the electrical connector on the fuel level sensor and disconnect the electrical connector. Squeeze the tangs on the retaining clip for the fuel level sensor and disconnect the fuel level sensor from the fuel pump. Remove the fuel pressure sensor from the fuel pump.

    5

Install the new fuel pump by performing steps 2 through 4 in reverse order. Connect a new fuel strainer to the fuel pump by pushing it into the bottom of the fuel pump until the fuel strainer is fully seated. Ensure that the strainer does not interfere with the movement of the float arm. Install a new seal on the fuel tank. Tighten the attaching bolts on the fuel tank strap to 30 foot-pounds with a torque wrench.

    6

Refill the fuel tank and fasten the filler cap on the fuel tank. Connect the cable to the negative terminal on the battery. Turn the ignition on for two seconds, then turn it off for 10 seconds to pressurize the fuel system. Turn the ignition on and check the fuel system for leaks.

RAV4 2000 O2 Sensor Removal

The 2000 Toyota RAV4 is fitted with two oxygen sensors mounted on either side of the catalytic converter. If your RAV4 has dual exhaust, there will be four sensors, two on each pipe. When your RAV4s "Check Engine" light illuminates and your gas mileage appears to have decreased substantially, you likely have a bad oxygen sensor. Remove and replace the sensors as soon as you discover they have failed.

Instructions

    1

Raise the RAV4 with a jack and place it on jack stands. Locate the oxygen sensors in front of and behind the catalytic converter. The sensors look something like spark plugs threaded into the exhaust pipe and have electrical connectors attached to the top.

    2

Pull the wiring harness connection apart to disconnect it. Remove the sensor with a ratchet fitted with an oxygen sensor socket. Youll want to install a new sensor rather than try to fix the bad one.

    3

Coat the threads of a new oxygen sensor with anti-seize compound. Do not get anti-seize compound on the sensor head. Insert the new sensor by hand. Tighten the sensor with the ratchet and oxygen sensor socket.

    4

Push the connector together on the wiring harness until it clicks. Remove the jack stands and lower the car to the ground.

How to Reset the Check Engine Light on a 2000 Volvo S80

The Volvo S80 is a midsize sedan that made its debut in 1998. You can reset the "Check Engine" light on your 2000 Volvo S80 right from home, using an OBD II scan tool. These tools can be purchased at any auto parts store. Make sure to read the codes first and make any necessary repairs before attempting to reset the light. Doing so prematurely may damage the engine or computer. The On-Board Diagnostics II computer receives error codes from the engine and emissions system and the computer, in turn, illuminates the "Check Engine" light on your instrument cluster.

Instructions

    1

Put the key into the ignition and turn it to the "On" position. Dont start the engine.

    2

Plug the OBD II scan tool into the diagnostic port on the drivers side dashboard. This can be found under the steering column.

    3

Wait for the scan tool to read the codes. Navigate through the menu on the scan tool using the arrow keys. Find a command that says "Delete Codes" or something similar. Select this command.

    4

Wait for the scan tool to return to the main menu. Unplug the scan tool from the port and start the vehicle. Check to make sure that the "Check Engine" light has shut off.
